Truth (~8 min)

I want to walk you through three moments. Three short ones. Each one is about Jesus and community.

[Matthew 16. Set it simply.]

In Matthew 16, Peter has just confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus says back to him, “I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” Listen to that verb. “I will build.” Not you, Peter. Not you guys. Not you, Mike Finch. Me. I will build it.

That’s the first thing I want you to hear. The community we’re talking about — the one Jesus calls his church — Jesus is the builder. Not the youth pastor. Not the popular kid. Not the volunteers. Jesus.

[John 17. Slow down here. This is the heart of it.]

Second moment. The night before Jesus is arrested and crucified. Hours before the cross. He’s praying. And John writes down what he prayed for. And here’s what’s wild — he prays for us. Not just his disciples in the room. Listen to what he says: “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one… so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” (John 17:20–21)

Take that in. The night before Jesus died for the sin of the world, on his mind was you. Sitting in this room, two thousand years later. And what he prayed for you was not that you’d be successful. Not that you’d have a great senior year. He prayed that you’d be one. That you’d be in him, together.

Community isn’t something Jesus thought about on a slow Tuesday. It’s what he was praying for the night he was going to die.

Third moment. Paul, writing to a church that was a mess — divided, fighting, doing community badly — says this: “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:27)

Not “you have a body” or “you’re like a body.” You are the body of Christ. His body. The same body that was nailed to the cross for your sin and walked out of the grave on the third day — that body, alive in the world right now, is what you belong to when you belong to him.

So put it together. Jesus said, “I will build my church.” The night before he died, he prayed that we’d be one. He died for that oneness and rose to make it real. And what we walk into when we belong to him isn’t a club or a youth group — it’s his actual body in the world.

That changes what we’re doing here on a Sunday night. We’re not trying to manufacture community from scratch. We’re stepping into something Jesus is already building.

Invitation (~3 min)

I’ll tell you what I want this room to be. I want NHC Students to be a place where the community Jesus is building actually shows up. Where you don’t have to perform to belong. Where we’re not the cool youth group or the big one — we’re just his. Together. That’s what I want.

And if you’ve never been folded into that body — if you’ve heard about Jesus your whole life but never actually said yes to him — there’s nothing in the world I’d rather talk with you about. Find me after. There’s no wrong way to start.

Jesus, you said you’d build your church, and the night before you died you prayed that we’d be one. Thank you that we don’t have to manufacture this. Thank you that you went to the cross for it and walked out of the grave to make it real. Build something here. Make this a room where your body shows up. We’re yours. Amen.
