Beatitudes
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Hunger
sense - to desire, conceived of as feeling the physiological need to eat
to be or become in need or want of food; especiall when experiencing hunger pangs

Luke 6:21 ““Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.”
Luke 6:25 ““Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. “Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.”
John 6:35 “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”
Revelation 7:16 “They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat.”

Thirst

Righteousness
sense - adherence to what is required according to a standard; for example, a moral standard, though not always
sense - a status of legal rectitude that satisfies the moral requirements of God’s character

Isaiah 64:6 “We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.”
Amos 5:24 “But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”
SOTM is contrast of old righteousness compared to new righteousness. Murder vs. anger in the heart, adultery vs. lust, etc.

Merciful
a person who shows leniency, compassion, or forgiveness; especially towards someone who has offended them
Hebrews 2:17 “Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.”
Mercy
1 Timothy 1:15–16 “The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.”
Titus 3:5 “he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,”
2 Samuel 22:26 ““With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;” and Psalm 18:25 “With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;”
Thoughts —
Structure - could be 1) We must pursue righteousness/ right living / holiness. (what does this take?) 2) True satisfaction is found in righteousness (or spiritual maturity… or holiness)
Extend mercy because you have been shown mercy. You can’t out mercy God.
On v.7 - it seems backward to show mercy to receive mercy. This seems to be backwards because then it wouldn’t be mercy, it’d be merit.
Jesus didn’t merely say, blessed are those who have a goal for righteousness. He said those who hunger and thirst. Those are strong words and feelings that we all know. Jesus’ audience knew more about hunger and thirst than we do in HTS, AR in 2026.
When there’s a young person who is full of ambition, we often describe him as “hungry.” Think of Jesus’ zeal.

Isaiah 41:17–19 “When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the Lord will answer them; I the God of Israel will not forsake them. I will open rivers on the bare heights, and fountains in the midst of the valleys. I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive. I will set in the desert the cypress, the plane and the pine together,”
Hunger and thirst - Psalm 42:1–2 “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?” and Psalm 63:1–2 “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory.” and Isaiah 55:1–2 ““Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.”
As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness;
when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness.

hunger & thirst, think of Israel in the wilderness - God fills them.
Righteousness and salvation go together in Is. and some PS, and then Romans 1:16–17 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.””
righteousness is revealed in the Gospel
Psalm 98:1–3 “Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.”
the worldwide scope of this, from Israel to the whole world God has revealed his righteousness. His righteousness and salvation is Him remembering His covenant and being faithful to do everything He said He was going to do.
Romans 10:3 “For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.”
Romans 3:26 “It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”

Romans 1:17
mercy - parable of the unforgiving servant. goats and sheep (inheritance you can’t earn, but the extended mercy is what separates the sheep from the goats). good samaritan, meeting needs is showing mercy. A FB post or sharing a video is evoking a feeling, not really showing mercy. 1 john it’s not enough to say to your brother go be warm…
this beatitude seems backwards because scripture often uses the opposite logic, “we show mercy bc he’s shown us mercy”
“God treat my sin the way I treat other’s sins.” - this is basically what we pray when we pray that part in the Lord’s Prayer
