God’s Desire for Endurance

Hebrews 12:1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,”

The great cloud of witnesses refers to the hall of faith listed in Hebrews 11.

A quick review of Hebrews 11 and we read of outstanding victories and severe mistreatment. (Add a slide with examples?)

Having a steadfast faith in God doesn’t guarantee a happy, carefree life, as we discussed last night.

In fact, faith guarantees some form of abuse from the world.

But God is still in control.

In times of intense pain and suffering, we are called to endure because Christ can be confidently trusted.

Much like the faithfulness of the believers in Hebrews 11, we are called to persevere amidst hardships and recognize that we do not journey through hard times alone.

This great cloud also speaks to the rows and rows of “spectators” that are witnessing the race we’re now running.

We are not the first to endure, and we will not be the last

The writer establishes it is God that sets our race of endurance before us and He alone sets all the parameters, including suffering.

That implies that endurance in something that God desires.

Look no further than God’s only Son to see the greatest picture of endurance known to man.

Obviously endurance is going to be a key ingredient in the life of God’s people!

God is thoughtful and caring.

He has plan for our lives.

He cares not just about our eternity one day, but also our state of mind today.

But why has God set a race of endurance before us rather than a peaceful walk?
