†CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 27:4, 8
Elder Steven Hoffer
Minister: People of God, the Lord calls out to you: "Seek my face."
Congregation: One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.
Minister: Seek his face!
Congregation: Your face, Lord, we will seek.
†PRAYER OF ADORATION AND INVOCATION
†OPENING PSALM OF PRAISE #100A
“Shout to the Lord, All Earth”
†CONFESSION OF SIN AND ASSURANCE OF PARDON
based on Psalm 103:11-12
TIME OF SILENT CONFESSION
Minister: Let us confess our sins to our merciful God:
Congregation: Almighty and most merciful Father, we are thankful that your mercy is higher than the heavens, wider than our wanderings, and deeper than our sin. Forgive our careless attitudes toward your purposes, our refusal to relieve the suffering of others, our envy of those who have more than we have, our obsession with creating a life of constant pleasure, our indifference to the treasures of heaven, and our neglect of your wise and holy law. Help us to change our way of life so that we may desire what is good, love what you love, and do what you command, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Minister: Hear the promise of God: As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. Christians, your sins are forgiven.
Congregation: Thanks be to God!

THE OFFERING OF TITHES AND OUR GIFTS
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33, ESV)
PASTORAL PRAYER & THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
†HYMN OF PREPARATION #226
“O the Deep, Unbounded Riches”
SERMON James 4:1-6 Passions at War
PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION
O Lord, as we open now your word, we pray that the eyes of our heart may be enlightened, so that we may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that we may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
TEXT
1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? 6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
AFTER SCRIPTURE
The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever. Amen.

CONFESSION OF FAITH
Apostles’ Creed p. 851
Congregation is seated.
INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE
Why do we fight and have quarrels? Because our passions are at war.
But how can we have peace and life and rest? Because Christ as set the feast. He has set the banquet before us with all that we need. Drink to never be thirsty again and bread of life. It’s His own life laid down. And when we fear that this isn’t enough, that our daily bread will not come or our daily needs won’t be met, we remember that “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32, ESV).
This table welcomes all who belong to Christ through repentance, faith, baptism, and continuing union with his Church. If you do not repent of your sin, you must not come. If you do not trust in Christ alone for your salvation, you must not come. But if you confess your sin and rest in Christ, this table is for you. Come, taste and see that the Lord is good.
DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS
//once all elements are received//
[motion to partake]
For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
PRAYER
†OUR RESPONSE #234
Tune: The God of Abraham Praise
The whole triumphant host gives thanks to God on high;
“Hail, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!” they ever cry.
Hail, Abraham’s God and mine! I join the heav’nly lays;
all might and majesty are thine, and endless praise.
†BENEDICTION: GOD’S BLESSING FOR HIS PEOPLE
The Lord of peace Himself gives you peace; at all times and in every way. The Lord be with you all.
