Big Idea: Jesus is looking for worshipers whose whole lives are shaped by truth and genuine relationship with God.
This passage has the potential to challenge students beyond "sing louder" or "pay attention in church." Jesus is talking about identity, authenticity, and what kind of person God desires.

Sermon Title

"The Worshipers Jesus Seeks”
Text: John 4:22–23
"You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him."

Introduction (2-3 minutes)

Context: The Woman at the Well

Jesus is speaking with a Samaritan woman at a well.
This conversation is surprising because:
Jews and Samaritans had deep hostility.
Men generally did not have public theological conversations with women.
The woman had a broken past and was an outsider.
Yet Jesus intentionally seeks her out.
As the conversation unfolds, she asks a religious question:
"Where is the right place to worship?"
The Jews said Jerusalem. The Samaritans said Mount Gerizim.
To us, it sounds like:
Which church is right?
a church with good word?
a church with good worship?
Which worship style is best?
Traditional or modern?
The woman wants to talk about location.
Jesus wants to talk about transformation.
He shifts the conversation from:
"Where should worship happen?" to "What kind of worshiper are you becoming?"
That is the heart of this passage.

Body

Point 1: God Wants More Than Religious Activity (John 4:22) (4 minutes)

"You worship what you do not know..."

Exegesis

Jesus isn't being cruel.
He's saying worship must be rooted in the truth about who God actually is.
Hosea 6:6 “For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”
God has always valued knowing Him above religious rituals.
The Samaritans had partial knowledge of God. Their worship was sincere, but sincerity alone isn't enough.
A person can be passionate and still be wrong.

Illustration

A student can be completely sincere about an answer on a test and still fail if the answer is incorrect.
My mom was a jehovahs witness, people who were zealous but still wrong.
Passion doesn't replace truth.

Application for Students

Many teenagers grow up around Christianity:
attend church
know worship songs
know Bible stories
know Christian vocabulary
But Jesus asks:
"Do you actually know God?"
Not:
Do you know about Him?
Can you answer Bible trivia?
Do your parents know Him?
But:
Do you know Him personally?
Many students mistake familiarity with Christianity for a relationship with Christ.
Jesus says there is a difference.

Key Challenge

You can participate in worship without actually being a worshiper.

Point 2: True Worship Begins in the Heart (John 4:23a) (3–4 minutes)

"The hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit..."

Exegesis

Jesus is announcing a massive shift in understanding.
In the Old Testament, worship was centered around a place.
Now, through Christ, worship is centered around a relationship.
The phrase "in spirit" points toward worship that comes from the inner person. What God has always wanted. Deuteronomy 6:5 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”
Psalm 51:16–17 “For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”
Not merely external actions.
Not performance.
Not appearance.
Not checking religious boxes.

Why This Matters to Teenagers

Students live in a world of performance.
They perform:
on social media
in sports
academically
socially
Many feel pressure to create an image.
But God sees beyond image.
You can fool:
teachers
coaches
parents
friends
You cannot fool God.
True worship begins where nobody else can see: The Heart.
motives
desires
affections
thoughts

Deeper Question

When nobody is watching:
Who or what has your heart?
Because worship is not just singing.
Worship is whatever receives your highest love, trust, and devotion.
Sometimes students worship:
popularity
achievement
relationships
sports
approval
Anything that sits on the throne of the heart becomes an object of worship.

Point 3: True Worship Must Be Grounded in Truth (John 4:23b) (3–4 minutes)

"...in spirit and truth..."

Exegesis

Jesus refuses two extremes.

Spirit without truth

Emotion without foundation.
This says:
"I feel close to God."
"It feels spiritual."
But feelings alone cannot determine truth.

Truth without spirit

Correct doctrine without love.
Knowing facts about God while remaining distant from Him.
The Pharisees often fell into this trap.

Jesus Holds Both Together

True worship is:
sincere and accurate
passionate and biblical
heartfelt and grounded
God wants both.
Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”

Student Application

Culture often says:
"Live your truth."
Jesus says:
"Live according to the truth."
Truth is not something we invent.
Truth is revealed by God.
A life built on feelings alone will constantly shift.
A life built on God's truth has stability.
When students face:
anxiety
identity questions
peer pressure
suffering
temptation
God's truth becomes an anchor.
True worshipers don't merely feel something on Sunday.
They build their lives on what is true every day.

Point 4: The Stunning Reality—God Is Seeking Worshipers (John 4:23c) (2 minutes)

"...for the Father is seeking such people to worship him."
This may be the most shocking part of the passage.
Notice:
Jesus does not say worshipers are seeking God.
He says the Father is seeking worshipers.
God takes the initiative. (Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”” )
The woman at the well wasn't looking for Jesus.
Jesus was looking for her.
This is grace.
Matthew 7:7–8 ““Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” In context we understand that God will never draw back or reject a heart that wants to understand and know Him in Spirit and Truth.
God pursues people before they pursue Him.
There is an infinite willingness of Christ to receive sinners.
we should treasure this truth
He is more ready to hear than we are to pray
He is more ready to give favours than we are to ask.
ALL DAY He stretches our His hands to the disobedient and rebellious with pity and compassion, even if they have no thoughts of Him.
He stands waiting to give mercy and grace to the worst and most unworthy, if they only cry to Him.
He will never draw back.
(Slow down, let this sink into your heart Lorenzo)

Application

Many students feel:
unnoticed
insignificant
forgotten
But the God of the universe is actively seeking people whose hearts belong to Him.
You are not an accident.
You are not invisible.
The Father seeks worshipers.

Conclusion (1–2 minutes)

Ask students:
When Jesus looks at my life, what does He find?
Someone who:
attends church?
knows Christian language?
sings worship songs?
Or someone whose heart truly belongs to Him?
Jesus isn't searching for perfect people.
He's searching for true worshipers.
Students who:
know Him personally,
love Him genuinely,
build their lives on His truth,
and worship Him with their whole hearts.

Final Challenge

Don't settle for being around worship.
Become the kind of worshiper Jesus is looking for.
Because what you worship in middle school and high school will shape who you become for the rest of your life.
Jesus made clear the priceless excellence of His gift, when we compared it with things of this world.
John 4:13–14 “Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.””
Your worship determines your direction.
Testimony???
1 John 2:15–17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”
And Jesus says the Father is seeking worshipers even today. From our youth, and from you Church. So what example will we set? What well are we guiding our kids to drink from?
