INTRODUCTION

"Have you ever been in a crowded restaurant or family gathering where dozens of conversations are happening at the same time?
At first it sounds like noise.
But then someone across the room says your name.
Suddenly your attention locks in.
Why?
Because among all the voices, you recognized the one voice that mattered.
Every day we are surrounded by voices.
Culture speaks. Fear speaks. Social media speaks. Our emotions speak. Our past speaks.
The question is NOT whether there are voices.
The question is: Which voice do you recognize?"
Transition: "Jesus said His sheep know His voice and will not follow a stranger."
John 10:27 “My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.”

Big Idea

God is speaking, but we must learn to recognize His voice, trust His leading, and obey His direction.

I. GOD'S VOICE IS RECOGNIZED THROUGH RELATIONSHIP

The problem is not that God isn't speaking. The problem is that many people are trying to recognize a voice they rarely spend time with.

A. The Shepherd knows His sheep.

John 10:14 “I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me,”
The time that you went to the store and lost your wife and then you heard her laughing a couple aisles over.
why do you think I was able to discern my wife voice?

B. Intimacy precedes discernment.

Anything your heart wants you will go searching for it until you find it. You cannot find anything that your does not look for.
That is why if you go looking for love, you will find it whether they’re good or bad.
Jeremiah 29:13 “You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart.
The only way to develop intimacy is to search for God with all of your heart. How
Psalm 25:14The secret counsel of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he reveals his covenant to them.”

C. God's voice becomes familiar through consistent fellowship.

John 15:4–5Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.”
The Shepherd speaks personally, but He never speaks inconsistently. Which leads us to the second way we recognize His voice.

II. GOD'S VOICE IS CONFIRMED BY HIS WORD

Many people say, 'God told me,' but if what God supposedly told them contradicts His Word, then it wasn't God speaking.

A. God never contradicts what He has already spoken.

2 Timothy 3:16–17 “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

B. Scripture teaches us how God thinks.

Isaiah 55:8–9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways.” This is the Lord’s declaration. “For as heaven is higher than earth, so my ways are higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Romans 12:2 CSB
Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

C. The Word protects us from deception.

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”

III. GOD'S VOICE IS DISCERNED THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Many believers are waiting for God to shout while ignoring the gentle promptings He is already giving.

A. The Holy Spirit leads God's children.

Romans 8:14 “For all those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons.”
He leads them into truth
He leaves them in Christlikeness
He leaves them in the holiness
He leads them into freedom
Who leads them in sonship
He needs to God’s purpose
Effective prayer

B. The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit.

Romans 8:16 CSB
The Spirit himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children,
Acts 15:28 “For it was the Holy Spirit’s decision—and ours—not to place further burdens on you beyond these requirements:”

C. The Spirit often guides through inward conviction and prompting.

Acts 16:6–10 CSB
They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia; they had been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. When they came to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. Passing by Mysia they went down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision in which a Macedonian man was standing and pleading with him, “Cross over to Macedonia and help us!” After he had seen the vision, we immediately made efforts to set out for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.
Ephesians 4:30 “And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by him for the day of redemption.”
"Because the ultimate proof that we've heard God's voice isn't what we know. It's what we do."

IV. GOD'S VOICE REQUIRES OBEDIENCE

The greatest threat to hearing God's voice tomorrow may be refusing to obey His voice today.

A. Hearing and following are inseparable.

James 1:22 “But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

B. Discernment grows through obedience.

Hebrews 5:14 CSB
But solid food is for the mature—for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil.
John 7:17 “If anyone wants to do his will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own.”

C. God's leading is often accompanied by His peace.

Colossians 3:15 “And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts. And be thankful.”
Philippians 4:6–7 “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
Isaiah 26:3 “You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in perfect peace, for it is trusting in you.”
And that brings us back to where we started: Jesus never said His sheep would know everything. He simply said they would know His voice and follow Him.

CONCLUSION

The voice you trust determines the path you follow, and the path you follow determines the life you experience. That's why learning to hear God's voice isn't a spiritual luxury—it's a necessity for every believer.

What voice am I listening to?

1 John 4:1 “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

What has God already spoken that I need to obey?

Isaiah 30:21 “and whenever you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.”

Am I following the Shepherd or merely admiring Him?

Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say?”

Closing Statement

The goal is not merely to hear God's voice. The goal is to know the Shepherd so well that His voice becomes unmistakable.
