David: Formed in the Wilderness

The events we read in just a few chapters likely span close to a decade. David wasn't in the cave for a weekend. He spent years learning trust, restraint, patience, and integrity before he ever sat on the throne.

That's one reason the Psalms from this period are so powerful—they are not the prayers of a man enduring a brief hardship, but of a man who spent years walking through uncertainty while waiting on God's promise.

I. Running to God

Text: 1 Samuel 21–22

David flees, acts out of fear, and hides in caves—but he also begins to cry out to God.

II. Seeking God

Text: 1 Samuel 23

David inquires of the Lord repeatedly—this becomes his distinguishing mark.
