The Fruit Reveals the Root

Imagine two gardens side by side.

Both have the same sunlight, the same rain, and appear healthy from a distance. But as the season progresses, one garden produces beautiful vegetables and fruit. The other becomes overrun with weeds, thorns, and briars.

The difference wasn't visible at first. The difference was beneath the surface—in what was planted.

You don't get tomatoes from thornbushes, and you don't get weeds from good seed. The harvest always reveals the seed.

James says wisdom works the same way. Earthly wisdom plants the seeds of envy, selfish ambition, and pride. Over time it produces disorder and every evil practice (James 3:16). Heavenly wisdom plants purity, peace, gentleness, mercy, and good fruits. Over time it yields "the fruit of righteousness" (James 3:18).

If you want to know what kind of wisdom is guiding your life, don't just listen to your words—look at your harvest.

Are your relationships marked by conflict or peace?

Are you producing selfishness or service? Disorder or righteousness?

The fruit reveals the root, and the harvest reveals the wisdom that has been planted in the heart.

Just as a garden reveals the seed that was sown, a life reveals the wisdom that has been followed.

Learning the Text- James 3:13-18

Who is wise and understanding? The one who demonstrates the application of God's word (3:13). 

Bitter jealousy and selfish ambition produce falsehood and is earthly in nature (3:14-15). 

Earthly, demonic, and unspiritual things are the source of evil and every vile practice (3:16). 

The contrast with heavenly wisdom focuses on peace and bearing godly fruit (3:17). 

If you want to harvest righteousness, you must plant peace (3:18).

The source of your wisdom is revealed by the fruit of your life.

What does this look like in real life?

Godly wisdom produces godly works (v. 13).

Wisdom produces humility because you understand how much you don’t know and need God’s instruction. Wisdom MUST be PROVEN.

Knowledge is information. Wisdom is application. Ask and you shall receive (James 1:5).

What do these “good works” look like in a Christian’s life?

Exposing unfruitful works (Eph. 5:8-10).

Walking in light- good, right, and true.

Discernment- pleasing to the Lord

Expose the unfruitful works of darkness.

“Understanding”- you know the value of godly wisdom (1:21).

Remove iniquity

Received meekly

Reap eternity.

Living by earthly wisdom defiles conduct and destroys relationships (3:14-16).

Look at the modifiers that describe this type of life: bitter jealousy, selfish ambition, unspiritual, demonic, earthly, false to the truth.

What does earthly wisdom produce?

Disorder- this word means “rebellion.”

Humanity has struggled with rebellion since Genesis 3.

The Lord shows you time and again what happens when we follow human wisdom instead of His divine instruction.

We live in rebellion to God’s word and disorder become part of your life.

Every Vile Practice- all morality that is below God’s standard of living and wisdom.

Proverbs 13:15- “Good sense wins favor, but the way of the treacherous is their ruin.”

God-given wisdom produces godly living (3:17-18).

What does God-given wisdom produce?

Pure (Matthew 5:8- “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” )

Peaceable (Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”)

Gentle (Matthew 5:5- “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”)

Open to reason (Matthew 5:3 - “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”)

Full of Mercy (Matthew 5:7 -“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.”)

Good Fruits (Galatians 5:22–23- “22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”)

Impartial (Acts 10:34- “So Peter opened his mouth and said: ‘Truly I understand that God shows no partiality.’”

Sincere (1 Timothy 1:5- “The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” )

Reaping a harvest of righteousness is an intentional act (v. 18).

Hosea 8:7- “ For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it shall yield no flour; if it were to yield, strangers would devour it.”

Galatians 6:7–8- “7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”

The source of your wisdom is revealed by the fruit of your life.
