Hunger and thirst for Righteousness

Matthew 5:6

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

The beatitudes are expressions of christian behavior describing humility in action.

Hunger and thirst express an intense desire

Psalm 63:1 “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

Proverbs 2:3–4 “yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures,”

Isaiah 26:9 “My soul yearns for you in the night; my spirit within me earnestly seeks you. For when your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.”

Psalm 42:1 “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.”

To hunger and thirst for righteousness indicates an overwhelming desire for righteousness,

What is righteousness?

It means to be in perfect accordance with Gods law in everyway, word, deed and thought? even motive

The righteousness we should yearn for is to live in perfect accord in Gods law.

Is this attainable by us?

So why should we desire what we can never attain or achieve?

isnt it pointless?

Why should i hunger and thirst if i already have Christs perfect righteousness?

we hunger more and more after the righteousness we only have in Christ.

Beloved you do have perfect righteousness in Christ, but you still wage war with sin everyday, and through our sanctification we walk more and more in holiness.

But through our sanctification we become more and more sorrowful over our sin, we mourn our sin, If your like me their are times were you lose the battle against sin day after day, or you are really struggling with the same sin over and over again,

you return to your vomit

Proverbs 26:11 “Like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool who repeats his folly.”

How discouraged do we get over our sin FBC, Oh lord i just prayed about this sin, I failed again, I love you my God but I am in a body of death, who will deliver me??

Those moments is when we need to strive yearn crave for the righteousness only found in Christ

We not only needed Christs righteousness at the moment of salvation.

When you stumble and fall into your sin, there is a sense where you lose your assurance do you not? you were unfaitfhful in your sin, but it doesnt depend on your faithfulness, your security depends on THE faithful one

We stumble into sin yes, But Christs righteousness picks us up dusts us off and Carries on our walk.
