The Bread of Life

“Jesus, the Bread of Life”

John 6:35–40 “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

INTRO

There’s a kind of hunger you feel in your stomach… and there’s a kind of hunger you feel in your soul.

One is physical — you feel it when the food runs low, when the cupboard is empty, when you stretch a meal to feed the kids first.

The other is spiritual — you feel it when life feels empty, when hope feels thin, when you’re tired of surviving.

Into a world full of both kinds of hunger, Jesus stands up in John 6 and says something shocking: “I am the bread of life.”

Not “I am the dessert of life.”

Not “I am the seasoning of life.”

Not “I am the luxury of life.”

Bread…..The most basic, essential, everyday food. Jesus is saying: “I am what you need most.”

JESUS PROVIDES WHAT YOU NEED MOST

John 6:35 — “I am the bread of life.”

Before Jesus ever preached this sermon, He fed the 5,000.

He didn’t ignore their hunger. He didn’t say, “Just pray harder.”

He didn’t say, “Be more spiritual.”

He said, “Sit down. I’ll feed you.”

Illustration: The boy with the lunch A little boy hands Jesus his tiny lunch — five loaves and two fish. Not enough for a crowd. Barely enough for him. But in the hands of Jesus, not enough becomes more than enough. That’s what Jesus does. He takes what you have, what you lack, what you fear… and He provides.

Application

Some of you know what it’s like to pray over a pot of food and hope it stretches.

Some of you know what it’s like to go without so your kids can eat.

Some of you know what it’s like to wonder where tomorrow’s meal is coming from.

Jesus sees that. Jesus cares about that. Jesus steps into that. He is your Provider — not just for your soul, but for your life.

“Jesus doesn’t ignore your hunger — He steps into it and provides.”

2. JESUS IS SUFFICIENT FOR EVERY NEED

John 6:35 — “Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

Jesus isn’t offering a snack. He’s offering satisfaction.

He’s saying: “I’m not just enough for today — I’m enough for every day.”

Illustration: The meal that never lasts You know how it works: You eat today… and tomorrow you’re hungry again. You work today… and tomorrow the bills come again. You feel strong today… and tomorrow you’re exhausted again.

Life drains you. Life empties you. Life takes more than it gives. But Jesus says: “Come to Me, and you will never be spiritually empty again.”

Application

• When money runs out — Jesus is enough.

• When strength runs out — Jesus is enough.

• When people fail you — Jesus is enough.

• When opportunities disappear — Jesus is enough.

He is the one thing in your life that doesn’t run out.

“If Jesus is your source, you’ll never live in spiritual starvation again.”

3. JESUS ALONE GIVES ETERNAL LIFE

John 6:40 — “Everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life.”

John 6:51 — “The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

Jesus doesn’t just give bread — He becomes the bread. He gives His life so you can have life.

Illustration: The difference between a meal and a Savior People can give you food for a day. Governments can give you aid for a season. Friends can help you through a moment. But only Jesus can give you eternal life. Only Jesus died for you. Only Jesus rose for you. Only Jesus can save you.

Application Eternal life isn’t found in:

• Religion

• Good works

• Trying harder

• Being better

• Fixing yourself

Eternal life is found in Jesus alone.

“Bread can keep you alive for a day — Jesus can keep you alive forever.”

CLOSING MOMENT

If you’re hungry today — physically, emotionally, spiritually — Jesus sees you.

He cares about your daily needs.

He cares about your eternal soul.

He is the Bread of Life:

• Your Provider

• Your Sustainer

• Your Savior

• Your Source of eternal life

He invites you to come to Him, believe in Him, and be filled — forever.

The table of Jesus Imagine a table — not a table with limited portions, not a table where you have to fight for a seat, not a table where you’re judged for how much you need.

Jesus sets a table and says: “Come. There is enough for you.” And there always will be.
