Flipped: The Treasure That Turns Your Life

We’ve been walking through a series called FLIPPED, where Jesus turns our assumptions upside down so He can turn our lives right‑side‑up.

Because the truth is this:

We don’t need a slight adjustment. We need a complete reversal.

And nowhere does Jesus flip us more directly than in what we treasure, what we look at, and whom we serve.

We don’t need Jesus to tweak our habits. We need Him to flip our hearts.

We don’t need Him to polish our old priorities. We need Him to replace them.

And the foundation of this whole movement is found in the very first message Jesus ever preached. Matthew 4:17 says:

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

That one sentence is the doorway into the entire Christian life.

Repent

Repent means to turn — to change direction because you’ve changed your mind about who is right and who is worth following.

Believe

Belief = to trust that what God says is true and to live your life in a way that demonstrates that truth.

Belief is not just agreeing with Jesus. Belief is trusting Him enough to obey Him. Belief is trusting His Word enough to shape your decisions. Belief is trusting His promises enough to walk in them.

Repentance turns you toward Jesus. Belief keeps you walking with Jesus.

And today, Jesus is going to flip our understanding of:

what we treasure - our desires

what we focus on - our direction

and who we serve - our devotion

Because those three things determine the entire direction of your life.

So with that in mind, let’s turn to our passage.

Matthew 6:19–24 ““Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

Prayer

Father, we thank You for Your Word. We thank You that You speak clearly, directly, and lovingly to our hearts. You know what we treasure. You know what we focus on. You know what tries to master us.

Tonight, we ask You to do what only You can do. Flip our hearts right‑side‑up. Turn us away from the things that cannot save us. Set our desire on what lasts. Clear our vision so we can see You rightly. And bring our devotion back to the only Master who gives life.

Open our eyes to Your truth. Open our ears to Your voice. Open our hearts to Your correction and Your comfort.

We are listening. We are ready. Speak, Lord through your word. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Opening

You ever notice how easy it is to start believing that one thing will fix everything?

For some people here, it’s a job they heard about. For others, it’s getting into a certain place. For others, it’s reconnecting with someone who might help them out. And none of those things are bad. They’re good things.

But watch how it happens…

First, it starts as a desire. You hear about that opportunity, and suddenly it becomes the treasure. You start thinking, “If I could just get that, everything would change.”

Then your direction shifts. You wake up thinking about it. You go to bed thinking about it. Your mind keeps drifting back to it. Your focus narrows around that one thing.

And before long, that desire and that direction turn into devotion. It starts calling the shots. It shapes your decisions. It determines your mood. It becomes the thing you obey.

You didn’t plan for it to become your master. But it did.

Jesus knows this pattern. He knows how the human heart works. He knows how quickly a treasure becomes a direction… and how quickly a direction becomes a master.

That’s why He speaks so directly in Matthew 6.

POINT 1 — DESIRE

Your treasure reveals your desire. (Matthew 6:19–21)

Let’s look back at the text — verse 19.

Jesus says:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth…”

Jesus starts with treasure because treasure is where desire begins.

He’s not just talking about money. He’s talking about anything your heart leans on:

a job you’re hoping for

a relationship you want restored

a place you want to get into

a break you’re praying will come through

a person whose approval you crave

Those things become treasure, and treasure becomes desire.

A. Desire Is the Deep Pull of the Heart

Desire is not just something you want. Desire is something you trust.

Desire is the thing you believe will:

fix you

stabilize you

satisfy you

secure you

give you a future

Desire is the engine behind your decisions.

This is why Jesus starts with treasure — because treasure shapes desire, and desire shapes everything else.

B. Earthly Treasure Is Fragile

Look again at the text — Jesus says earthly treasure is:

eaten by moths

destroyed by rust

stolen by thieves

Meaning:

Earthly treasure is temporary, vulnerable, and unreliable.

Jesus isn’t warning you about losing money — He’s warning you about losing your heart.

It can be taken. It can fall apart. It can disappoint you. It can turn on you.

Jesus isn’t saying earthly things are bad — He’s saying they make terrible gods.

C. Heavenly Treasure Is Secure

Now look at verse 20.

“Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…”

Heavenly treasure is:

(1 Peter 1:4)imperishable

(2 Corinthians 4:18)eternal

(Matthew 6:4, 6, 18)rewarded by the Father

(Colossians 2:3)found in Christ Himself

Jesus is saying:

“Build your life on what cannot be taken from you.”

D. Your Treasure Reveals Your Desire

Now look at verse 21.

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Your heart follows your treasure. Your desire follows your treasure.

If you want to know what you truly desire… look at what you treasure.

E. Desire Has a Direction

James says:

“Each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire…” (James 1:14–15)

Let’s slow down and explain those words:

Lured

A fishing word — drawn out by something shiny, something attractive, something that promises satisfaction.

Enticed

A hunting word — trapped, hooked, caught.

Put together:

Desire pulls you out… and then desire pulls you in.

Desire is not neutral. It is leading you somewhere.

Now look back at the text — verses 22–23.

Jesus moves from treasure to vision, from desire to direction, because the eye is the bridge between the heart and the life.

He’s not changing subjects — He’s showing the progression of the heart

POINT 2 — DIRECTION

Your eye sets your direction. (Matthew 6:22–23)

We’ve seen how desire begins with treasure. Now Jesus moves to the next step — direction.

Now Look at the Text — Matthew 6:22

“The eye is the lamp of the body…”

In Scripture, the eye represents:

your focus

your attention

your inner orientation

the thing you’re looking toward

Your eye is the steering wheel of your life.

Where your eye goes → your life goes. Where your focus goes → your direction goes.

A. A Healthy Eye Brings Light

Look again at verse 22.

A healthy eye is:

clear

single in purpose

undivided

focused on God

When your eye is healthy — when your focus is on God — your whole life fills with light:

clarity

wisdom

stability

peace

purpose

A healthy eye produces a healthy direction.

B. A Bad Eye Brings Darkness

Now look at verse 23.

A bad eye is:

distracted

divided

clouded

focused on earthly treasure

A bad eye is not an ignorant eye — it’s a misaligned eye.

When your eye is bad — when your focus is on the wrong treasure — your whole life fills with darkness:

confusion

anxiety

instability

temptation

spiritual blindness

A bad eye produces a bad direction.

C. The Most Dangerous Darkness Is the Darkness You Think Is Light

Jesus says:

“If the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”

This is when you think you’re seeing clearly… but your focus is wrong.

This is when you think your plan will work… but your eye is fixed on something that cannot save you.

Illustration — The Grocery Cart Wheel

You ever pushed a grocery cart with a bad wheel?

You’re just trying to go straight… but that one wheel keeps pulling to the left.

You can fight it for a while. You can lean your weight into it. You can grip the handle tighter. But as long as that wheel is turned… your whole cart is going in that direction.

Jesus is saying the same thing about your eye — your focus.

Until the focus changes… the direction won’t.

Because whatever you focus on… will shape the entire direction of your life.

So Jesus has shown us:

Desire — what you treasure

Direction — what you focus on

Now He moves to the final step:

Devotion — what you serve.

Because whatever you focus on long enough… you will eventually serve.

POINT 3 — DEVOTION

Your master receives your devotion. (Matthew 6:24)

We’ve seen how desire begins with treasure. We’ve seen how direction follows your focus. Now Jesus brings us to the final step — devotion.

Look back at the text — verse 24.

“No one can serve two masters…”

Jesus doesn’t say, “No one should serve two masters.” He says, “No one can.”

It is impossible to divide devotion. Your heart isn’t built that way.

You will always end up serving one thing.

A. Devotion Is Love + Loyalty + Obedience

Jesus continues:

“For either he will hate the one and love the other…”

Devotion is not just obedience. Devotion is love. Devotion is loyalty. Devotion is attachment.

You will love one master… and resent the other.

You will cling to one… and push the other away.

You will obey one… and ignore the other.

Devotion is direction made permanent.

B. Devotion Reveals Your True Master

Jesus finishes the verse:

“You cannot serve God and money.”

The word “money” here is mammon — meaning:

wealth

possessions

security

comfort

opportunity

anything you trust to take care of you

Jesus is saying:

“You cannot serve God and anything else that promises to take His place.”

You can have money. You can have possessions. You can have opportunities. You can have relationships.

But you cannot serve them.

Because whatever you serve… owns your devotion.

One will win. One will rule. One will receive your devotion.

D. Devotion Is the Final Destination of Desire and Direction

Let’s connect the dots:

1. Desire — what you treasure

Your heart leans toward what you value.

2. Direction — what you focus on

Your life moves toward what you look at.

3. Devotion — what you serve

Your soul bows to what you follow.

This is why Jesus ends with devotion. Because devotion is the final proof of what you truly treasure.

E. Devotion Shows Up in Your Choices

Devotion is revealed in:

what you say “yes” to

what you say “no” to

what you sacrifice for

what you protect

what you chase

what you fear losing

what you obey

Devotion is not what you claim. Devotion is what you follow.

So Jesus has shown us:

Desire — your treasure

Direction — your focus

Devotion — your master

Now the question becomes:

Who — or what — is your master?

And what would it look like for Jesus to flip your heart right‑side‑up?

This whole series is called FLIPPED for a reason.

Jesus didn’t come to adjust your life. He came to flip it.

He didn’t come to polish your old heart. He came to give you a new one.

He didn’t come to help you manage your masters. He came to set you free from the wrong one and bring you under the right One.

So tonight, the invitation is for everyone in the room.

1. Invitation to the Unbeliever — Let Jesus Flip Your Life

If you’ve never trusted Jesus… never surrendered to Him… never believed that what God says is true and lived your life in a way that demonstrates that truth…

Then hear this:

Your life is already flipped — but in the wrong direction.

Your treasure is earthly. Your direction is dark. Your devotion is divided. Your master is destroying you.

But Jesus came to flip you back right‑side‑up.

Here is the gospel in one sentence:

Jesus lived the life you couldn’t live, died the death you should’ve died, and rose to give you the life you could never earn.

Only Jesus can give you a treasure that lasts, a light that guides, and a Master who saves. And He offers it freely.

If your heart is saying, “Jesus, flip my life,” then pray something like this:

“Jesus, I need You. I turn from my sin. I trust that what You say is true. Flip my heart. Be my Savior and my Master.”

He will not turn you away.

2. Invitation to the Believer — Let Jesus Flip You Back

Some of you are believers… but your heart has drifted.

Your treasure shifted. Your focus wandered. Your devotion divided.

You’re not running from Jesus — you’re just not running toward Him.

And Jesus is saying:

“Let Me flip you back.”

You don’t need a new salvation. You need a new surrender.

FINAL CALL — Choose Your Master

Jesus ends this passage with a line that demands a response:

“You cannot serve God and money.”

You cannot serve:

God and comfort

God and addiction

God and fear

God and your past

God and your pride

One will win. One will rule. One will receive your devotion.

So tonight Jesus is asking:

“Will you let Me flip your heart?”

Because:

He is the only treasure that satisfies.

He is the only light that guides.

He is the only Master who saves.

And He is here.
