The United States of America is a nation of Laws. We started with the Constitution and the Bill of rights. 10 Laws and a statement of Authority.
Today there Are 30,000 Federal statutes (Laws)
no exact number for how many laws exist in Colorado because the state's legal framework spans thousands of codified statutes, local ordinances, and tens of thousands of agency regulations
The thing about Laws is that they get pretty weird.
It is unlawful to mutilate rocks in a state park.
It is punishable by law to let your llama graze on city property.
It is unlawful to bring your horse or pack mule higher than the ground floor of any building.
Also in Denver, the dog catcher must serve all dogs notice of impounding for three consecutive days in a public place.
You are not allowed to drive a black vehicle on Sundays in Denver.
In Pueblo, you’d better not let pesky lawn weeds get out of control. It’s illegal to allow dandelions to grow inside the city limits.
In Fountain, it is against the law to have any weeds on your lawn.
In Logan County, it is strictly forbidden to kiss a woman while she sleeps.
Sterling does not permit cats to run loose without having been outfitted with a tail light.
In Aspen, it is unlawful to fire catapults of any fashion at buildings. This includes snowballs, stones, or any type of missile.
Don’t get lost in Westminster or allow anyone to get lost while driving your car. Both acts are illegal between the hours of 9p.m. and 4a.m.
As people we can get crazy with laws attempting to legislate what is right and wrong. We will see today that Israel had the same problem and God fixed it for good.
Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer.
I love when a speaker highlights the point of the conversation. We have been talking about Melchizedek for a bit. 8 chapters in and now here’s the point.
Jesus is our High Priest and he is sitting next to God
The high priests from the line of Aaron were never next to God but had to be cleansed before they could enter the Holy of Holies.
They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.” But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.
The reality is that the Old Testament law and the priests point us toward Christ.
The shadow pales in Comparison to the real thing
Christ work as High Priest is
has a More Excellent Ministry
Healing
Teaching
Restoration
Peace
Mediates Better
intercedes for us directly with God
Promises Better
He can/will fulfill the promises
God’s blessings are better than any priest
As Evidence the Author uses Jeremiah 31:31-34
For he finds fault with them when he says:
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,
when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah,
not like the covenant that I made with their fathers
on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt.
For they did not continue in my covenant,
and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws into their minds,
and write them on their hearts,
and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
Notice What the Lord says through Jeremiah in his warning to Israel
The day is Coming
New Commandment
different from the Old Covenant
Write the Laws on their minds
Write the laws on the Hearts
I will be their God
They will be my people
And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor
and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’
for they shall all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest.
For I will be merciful toward their iniquities,
and I will remember their sins no more.”
I don’t have to continually be taught to Know God.
Remember the Israelite relationship with God went through the priests. The people didn’t know God personally.
We got to connect this with Heb 6:1
Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
When we add this concept to Today’s lesson we see that the OT Israelites didn’t know God so they couldn’t understand the deeper things of faith like today.
Because we know God, we can come to a greater understanding than the OT Priests.
Because we have a relationship with God, he gives us mercy
When we engage in relationship with God, He forgives our sin.
What a Blessing
In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
We don’t need the old Covenant anymore. It’s obsolete.
The Old Covenant isn’t needed because we have the Holy Spirit to guide and direct us.

Why all this matters to us today
God is still working through his people.
The Holy Spirit writes the word on our Hearts.
We don’t need anyone between us and God. We have his ear.
