1. Our Attitude - Matthew 6:5-6
a. Not Hypocritical v5
b. Secret v6
2. Let Your Words be Few v7-8
a. Think v7
b. Do Not Be Rash v8
3. The Prayer v9-13
a. Exaltation v9
b. Submission v10
It is only when the heavenly Father, on the basis of the Son’s atonement, and through the operation of the Holy Spirit, rules in men’s hearts that true and lasting betterment in individual, family, social, national, and international conditions can be expected (
c. Request v11
Personally I see no reason, therefore, to depart from the translation to which many people have become accustomed, namely, “daily.” The meaning then would be, “Give us today the portion that is needed for any one day.”
d. Forgiveness v12
We are not saved on the basis of our faith, as if faith had earning power. We are saved by grace (
e. Protection v13
The logic of the petition is clear. An analogous request would be, “Lord, grant that I may be so careful in observing the rules of health that I may not become ill, but whatever in thy providence befalls me, keep me close to thy side that my faith may not fail.”
The Conclusion
13b. [For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.] It is commonly held that, since these words are absent from the leading manuscripts, the rules of textual evidence do not favor their inclusion in the Lord’s Prayer.
