THE STAGES OF SMALL GROUP GROWTH

Cultivating genuine FELLOWSHIP and SPIRITUAL GROWTH is a process that involves many stages. While there is often some overlap between each of these stages, most groups typically progress sequentially through each stage one by one. Group leaders should always strive to bring their group to the furthest point possible.

STAGE ONE: Creation

The Group Begins…
Group Identity:: Church Program
Member’s Questions:
What is a Small Group?
Why are we here?
What are we going to do?
Do I have time to be a part of this?
Leader’s Goal: Establish Christian Identity
God’s Word is the authority
Establish Christian Identity God’s Word is the authority Christian disciplines are practiced Discipleship growth is pursued

Impact upon Members:: The goals of small group ministry are understood

STAGE TWO: Formation

The Group Defines…
Group Identity: Church Program
Member’s Questions:
Do I like being here?
Should I make this group a priority?
Will I commit to this program?
Leader’s Goal: Develop Commitment
Impact upon Members:
Priorities in life are evaluated
New relationships are established
Personal growth from the study and application of God’s Word
Burdens can be shared and upheld in prayer by the group

STAGE THREE: Association

The Group Develops…
Group Identity: Growing Ministry
Member’s Questions:
Do I want to pursue close friendships with these people?
Will I commit to caring for these people?
Is this group really worth my time?
Leader’s Goal: Build Relationships
Impact upon Members:
Real friendships begin to grow
Relationships provide meaningful spiritual encouragement
Support and care is provided to one another in times of crisis and change
Personal growth continues through discussion and prayer

STAGE FOUR: Connection

The Group Deepens…
Group Identity: Established Community
Member’s Questions:
How well can I trust these people?
How much do I want to share?
How can I become more involved?
Leader’s Goal: Cultivate Vulnerability
Impact upon Members:
A genuine sense of belonging is experienced
Small group friendships become increasingly important
Deeply personal burdens are shared and upheld in prayer
Guilt is alleviated as sins are confessed to the group (or part of the group)

STAGE FIVE: Transformation

The Group Disciples…
Group Identity: Purposeful Fellowship
Member’s Questions:
How do I need to grow?
How can I change?
How can my small group help me grow?
Leader’s Goal: Promote Intentionality
Impact upon Members:
Group members help one another experience great victory over sin. This happens as groups become a place of humble exhortation, loving accountability, and empowering encouragement.
Great discipleship growth takes place as members “spur one another on toward love and good deeds.”
