Intro:

Do you see something all the time that you don’t really think of what it means?

Like the stapler has a small hole on the front…A small opening or slit reveals the remaining staple supply.

Jesus makes an important statement tied to communion

Luke 22:20- And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.

The New Covenant

Do you know what a covenant is?

It is a promise between 2 parties like signing a contract

But a famous one was made by God alone

Genesis 15:5–7 NASB95

5 And He took him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” 6 Then he believed in the Lord; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness. 7 And He said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess it.”

Then after God commands Abram to bring him some sacrifices verse 12 says a great sleep fell

Now it happened that the sun had set, and it was very dark, and behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a flaming torch which passed between these pieces.

18 On that day Yahweh cut a covenant with Abram, saying,

“To your seed I have given this land,

From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates:

God made the promise alone with Abraham

But after the Mosaic covenant was made

Exodus 19:5–6- ‘Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”

Exodus 19:8- All the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord.

But well does that go?

they didn’t have a heart, so God had a make a promise:

Deuteronomy 30:6- “Moreover the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live.

This promise comes up again in:

Jeremiah 31:31–34 NASB95

31 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. 33 “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 “They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

He promises them 3 things:

 First, “I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts.” This statement speaks of the regenerate heart God will give his people

No longer will one’s life be governed by laws written on stone tablets. Rather, the internal compulsion of a renewed heart will mark each covenant member (cf. 2 Cor 3:3; Gal 5:18).

Second, God promises that “they shall all know me,”

speaking of the regenerate relationship formed with God through the faith

Third, “I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

This promise of forgiveness is what Jesus is talking about

Because waht is the name of this covenant

Jeremiah 31:31 NASB95

31 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,

and

Luke 22:20 NASB95

20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.

Jesus’ blood is the sacrifice that brings about the new covenant just like those first animals

Have you had a month where you failed God’s standards in one way or another?

I hope you see that because that is God’s law written on your heart telling you that you’ve failed

Warning:

That is why Paul gives an important warning:

1 Corinthians 11:27–28 NASB95

27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

If you’re an unbeliever and you examine yourself, you will find unbelief

1 Corinthians 11:29 verse 29: “For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.” 

Discerning the body means grasping the utter uniqueness and glory of Jesus’s physical body as an infinitely valuable sacrifice for sins — which unbelievers do not do.

Remember Jesus is not just like remembering that Jesus live and died like George Washington lived an died

The memory is a loving memory, a thankful memory — not an unbelieving memory.

But we want you to participate in this

We want you to be made right with God

So

Psalm 139:23–24- Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

Ask yourselves these questions

a. Where have I loved other things more than God?

b.  What sin have I allowed to engage my attention this past week?

c.  What good should I have done, but did not do it?

Then, as we take communion we are remembering that this promise was also onesided

Jesus alone walked through death for us

His blood was spilt because you and I are not good enough… we sin

So the confession here says I need the savior still

Baptism is the entrance in the new covenant, and communion is the constant reminder of the promise Jesus makes for us

And the new covenant promises us the spirit who changes us

The Bread

*This is christ’s body broken for you.

As you consider your sins.

-Things seen and unseen remember the cost the perfect savior had to pay for it.

Luke 22:19- And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.

The cup

-As others sin against you, remember that your sin is forgiven by this blood, so you should forgive them.

& hopefully, their sin can be forgiven too.

Luke 22:20- And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.

Prayer

May we remember you Jesus because of this time
