INTRODUCTION:

1. It has been a good while since we have had a successful gospel meeting.

A. The time for a successful gospel meeting is here.

1. What is a successful gospel meeting?

A. The unadulterated message of God is proclaimed.

Gal 1.6-
Galatians 1:6–9 NKJV
6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.

B. Local members of the Lord’s church support the work of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 15:58 NKJV
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

C. Local members of the Lord’s church prepare for the work of the Lord.

Ezra 7:10 NKJV
10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel.
Ezra

D. Local members of the Lord’s church have a mind to do the work of the Lord.

Neh
Nehemiah 4:6 NKJV
6 So we built the wall, and the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.

2. Does a successful gospel meeting mean the building will be full of people?

A. No!

Matthew 7:13–14 NKJV
13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

B. Unfortunately, we live in a time where people reject the truth.

2 Timothy 4:1–4 NKJV
1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

C. However, one soul is worth all of the work put into a gospel meeting.

2 Timothy 4:1-
Luke 15:1–7 NKJV
1 Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.” 3 So He spoke this parable to them, saying: 4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ 7 I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.

D. Though the success of a gospel meeting does not depend upon the number of people who attend, we should place no less value upon the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 13:45–46 NKJV
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
M
1. If the lack of attendance is because of our own lack of effort, then the gospel meeting was not a failure; we simply failed to see the value of the kingdom to the world!

B. Every one of us ought to be vitally interested in the success of this effort.

1. The success of the gospel meeting is tied to the success of our Christianity.

2 Peter 3:9 NKJV
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
1 Peter 3:9 NKJV
9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.

2. If the gospel meeting is a failure, then we are a failure as Christians because...

A. The unadulterated message of God was not preached.

B. Local members of the Lord’s church did not support the work of the Lord.

C. Local members of the Lord’s church did not prepare for the work of the Lord.

D. Local members of the Lord’s church did not have a mind to do the work of the Lord.

C. For the gospel meeting to be a success, we must realize our responsibility and accept it.

1. Let’s look at this short message and prepare ourselves for the work of the Lord.

BODY:

1. PURPOSE OF THE GOSPEL MEETING.

A. Seek the lost!

Luke 19:10 NKJV
10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

1. This is done by proclamation of the message of God.

Romans 1:14–17 NKJV
14 I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to unwise. 15 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

2. A gospel meeting is an excellent way to help friends and neighbors hear the soul-saving message of the gospel.

Romans 10:17 NKJV
17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

A. This is a good place to point out that everyone in this town is our neighbor, and everyone who we come into contact with is an opportunity to do good.

1. A lawyer asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?”
Luke 10:29 NKJV
29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
2. Jesus’ parable showed him that everyone is his neighbor.
Luke 10.
Luke 10:30–36 NKJV
30 Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ 36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”
Luke 10:30–35 NKJV
35 On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’
Lk 10.30-36
Luke 10:30-
3. When the question arises, ‘Who should I invite to the gospel meeting?’ the answer is everyone!

3. We have been commanded to teach all.

Matthew 28:18–20 NKJV
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

2. BE PREPARED FOR THE GOSPEL MEETING.

A. Someone once said, “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.”

1 Peter 3:15 NKJV
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;
2 Peter 3:15 NKJV
15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you,

1. We must be prepared for this gospel meeting!

A. This means...

1. Getting the message out (People cannot attend if they do not know).
Matthew 10:27 NKJV
27 “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops.
2. Being ready to attend.
Hebrews 10:25 NKJV
25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
3. Being ready to encourage.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 NKJV
11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
4. Being ready to show visitors that they matter.
1 Peter 4:9 NKJV
9 Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.

CONCLUSION:

1. If the preacher was unprepared, everyone would know it.

A. If the congregation is unprepared, everyone will know it.

2. The success of this gospel meeting is not based on numbers.

A. It is based upon the amount of godliness we are willing to put into it.

B. If we will give it our all, God will reply in turn and overrun our cup.

Luke 6:38 NKJV
38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
