John 5:1–15 ESV
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’ ” They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.

1001 Illustrations that Connect Illustration 331: Your Worth

If someone offered you a twenty-dollar bill, would you take it? What if that person wadded up the bill and threw it on the ground—would you still want it? What if he stepped on it, kicked it, and even spit on it? Could you still go to the store and spend it?

The answer is yes. That bill has value because of what it is, not because of how it looks, where it’s been, or what it has been used for. A crisp, clean twenty-dollar bill is worth the same amount as an ugly, old, abused one.

You may feel like you’ve been stepped on, beat up, or kicked around. You may feel dirty, unworthy, or useless. But be encouraged by the twenty-dollar bill—no matter what you’ve been through, you still have value to God!

I. The Place Deliverance ()

I.The Bethesda of (Grace & Mercy)

John 5:1–3 ESV
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed.
JN 5:1-3

5:1. Jesus … later returned to Jerusalem for a feast. The feast is not named (some mss. read “the feast”), but it may have been the Passover. Jesus attended three other Passovers (2:23; 6:4; 11:55). John probably intended only to give a reason why Jesus was in Jerusalem.

5:2. To the north of the temple area was a pool … called Bethesda (see the map showing the pool’s location). The excavations of a pool near the Sheep Gate have uncovered five porticoes or covered colonnades, confirming the accuracy of the description given here in the Fourth Gospel. The pool was actually two pools next to each other.

Bethesda has been said to mean “grace or mercy so we would be able to call this place the house of mercy or the house of grace. Everyone around who were invalid or low down sick as people would say in some parts of the USA. It was a condition for some to be “too sick to move”. Many times in humans can be depressed or discourage to the point of wishing they could die.
1 Kings 19:1–4 ESV
Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.” Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
1 Kings 19:1-4

6066 Stubborn Disease

At least a quarter-million and possibly a million citrus trees in California suffer from “stubborn disease,” according to Dr. E. C. Calavan, University of California plant pathologist.

While the cause of “stubborn disease” in citrus is not known, the cause of “stubborn disease” in man is no mystery. This ailment can be traced back to the Garden of Eden

AP1. The COC for eternity is called the pillar and ground of truth

1 Timothy 3:15 ESV
if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.
1 tim :
1 Timothy 3:16 ESV
Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
The COC is the sphere of grace in which those who were save by grace through faith stand.
Romans 5:1–5 ESV
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
romans 5:1-5

II. The Case For Grace And Mercy()

John 5:3–5 ESV
In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
jn 5:3-5
The text reveals to us that there are all kinds in invilids there at Bethesda. The house named for Grace or mercy. Among them is a “certain” man who have been an invilid for 38 years. One may ask the question why did he come to the same place for 38 years without any real opportugnity to be healed.
The text does not give us information on what he was thinking or even if he was thinking but his persistance to keep going to Bethesda reveals a kind of hope which he was not ashame. It may have looked from his friends and neighbors point of view he was down and out but his patience and consistancy was about to be rewarded. Springs of grace and mercy was about to flow in his desert of despair. His bitter waters was about to be turned sweet Grace and the light of the world was about to take him to higher hights.

Humility is needed for our victory in Christ.1
1 Peter 5:6 ESV
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,
1 Peter 5:6
1 Peter 5:7 ESV
casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7
7603 “Humility Gate”
There is a church in Palestine the doorway of which is so low that one must stoop to enter it. This was to prevent medieval raiders from riding their horses into the church and disrupting the worship. The door is called “Humility Gate.”
When we are stuck in an impossible circumstance “hit the floor” our humility will get God’s attention faster then attitude “i don’t deserve this attitude”
Romans 15:3 ESV
For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.”
Romans 15:3

III. The Christ of Grace And Mercy ()

John 5:6 ESV
When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?”
jn. 5:6
John 5:7–14 ESV
The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.”
Jn. 5:7-14
As the Christ of Grace and Mercy for the man had an answered Christ to take away blame perhaps but we do know that Christ has no need for a man to tell Him the truth or what a man believes. Christ seemed to operated beyond the man’s conscious mind and knew what is really on all men’s mind.
John 2:23–24 ESV
Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people
jn 2:23-24
The man was an invalid and also sin appears to be the reason for his sickness. In 1 cor.11:31
1 Corinthians 11:31 ESV
But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.
1 cor. 11:31
1 Corinthians 11:30 ESV
That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.
1 cor.11:30
The Christ tells a man who is sick and had sin to :Take up his bed and walk. Grace and mercy was not extended to the invalid because he was moral but because
Christ is God and full of grace and mercy

4096 “Incurable” Disease

Charles Kettering, the famous research scientist, is impatient with people who speak of insurmountable obstacles. “It is like the doctors with their incurable diseases,” he says. “Did you ever stop to think what an incurable disease is? It is one the doctor doesn’t know how to cure.”

The Break Through

The invalid was crushed on both sides Physically and Spiritually but the day he meet the Christ of grace and mercy was the end of all his misery and mental pain. He did as Christ told him to do and believe with the Son of God he could walk and no be cripple and be free from sin.
We have an epidemic in the USA caused by the doctors of trying to cure sin with pain pills. People are committing suicide trying medicate themselves to cope with a sin filled life. I offer to you the Christ of grace and mercy who is full of truth. He specializes in the impossible to give you victory!

Joshua

Exodus 17:8–13 ESV
Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.

Samuel

1 Samuel 7:3–13 ESV
And Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the Lord with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you and direct your heart to the Lord and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.” So the people of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and they served the Lord only. Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel at Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.” So they gathered at Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before the Lord and fasted on that day and said there, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the people of Israel at Mizpah. Now when the Philistines heard that the people of Israel had gathered at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the people of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines. And the people of Israel said to Samuel, “Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us, that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.” So Samuel took a nursing lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. And Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him. As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to attack Israel. But the Lord thundered with a mighty sound that day against the Philistines and threw them into confusion, and they were defeated before Israel. And the men of Israel went out from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines and struck them, as far as below Beth-car. Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer; for he said, “Till now the Lord has helped us.” So the Philistines were subdued and did not again enter the territory of Israel. And the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

Saul

1 Samuel 11:9–13 ESV
And they said to the messengers who had come, “Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have salvation.’ ” When the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they were glad. Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will give ourselves up to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you.” And the next day Saul put the people in three companies. And they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together. Then the people said to Samuel, “Who is it that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring the men, that we may put them to death.” But Saul said, “Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the Lord has worked salvation in Israel.”

Jonathan

1 Samuel 14:45 ESV
Then the people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As the Lord lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people ransomed Jonathan, so that he did not die.
