I. Introduction:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” With that single line, David opens a window into the heart of God. Psalm 23 is not a psalm about a trouble‑free life; it is a psalm about a faithful God who walks with us through every season. The goodness of God is not theoretical—it is personal, practical, and deeply present.

A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

III. God’s Goodness Provides

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

A. The Lord - is the foundation for everything that follows. This flows directly from our relationship.

B. My Shepherd - to shepherd v. — to tend as a shepherd, as of sheep or goats.

B. I shall not want - to be lacking v. — to be inadequate in amount or degree.

I will not lack or I will not be in need.

IV. God’s Goodness Gives you Peace

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.

A. to cause to lie down v. — to cause to assume a reclining position; often with the implication of rest.

B. pasture n. — a field covered with grass or herbage and suitable for grazing by livestock.

C. to lead (guide) v. — to take or guide somewhere.

D. Still waters - Calmness without waves

V. God’s Goodness Restores

Psalm 23:3 KJV 1900

He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

A. to restore v. — to bring back into original existence, use, function, or position.

B. inner self n. — the part of a person (or animal) that thinks, feels, wills, and desires; perhaps an extension of the literal meaning throat.
