Come bid the nations sing with us, the praises of the Lord. A Song for Every Dad Psalm 112 Introduction • Often paired with Psalm 111, both are Hebrew acrostic poems – A-Z’s of the Godly Man. • Psalm 112 is entirely descriptive and expressly masculine: 1. “Man” is specifically male; all pronouns are masculine 2. His actions fall under male, familial headship prominent in the day and outlined in the Bible. 3. Unlike Proverbs 31, Psalm 112 says nothing of appearance, style, hobbies, or trade. 4. Today’s outline: (1) Who is the Blessed Dad? (2) What comes from the Blessed Dad’s Life? Who is the Blessed Dad? 1. He fears the LORD (112:1a) 2. He greatly delights in the word of the LORD (112:1b) 3. He is fundamentally gracious, merciful, and generous: • • • Wealth is stored so he can bless others (112:3) He deals generously and lends (112:5) He distributes freely and gives to the poor (112:9) 4. He conducts all his business with integrity: • • He is righteous (112:4) – in conformity to God’s word He does business justly (112:5) – even-handed and fair 5. He trusts God through bad news (112:7) and dark times (112:4). What Comes of the Blessed Dad’s Life? 1. His Children Prosper: • • They will be mighty in the land (112:2a; cf Deuteronomy 4:40) They will be blessed (112:2b) 2. He Leaves a Legacy: • • His derived righteousness lasts as long as God’s (112:3) His children will remember his wisdom and grace (112:6) 3. He is a Pillar: • • • He will never be moved (112:6) He is unafraid of bad news (112:8) His strength is honored and honorable (112:9) What Comes of the Blessed Dad’s Life? 4. He has outspoken enemies: • • • Adversaries are sure to rise (112:8) Those adversaries gnash their teeth in anger, greed, and fruitless jealousy (112:10) These vain attacks melt away like a slug under salt (see Psalm 58:8) Musings on the Blessed Dad • Let us be dads who are generous with others long before we are generous with ourselves. • Children (young and old) typically go to mom for comfort and to their dad for approval. Let us be generous with glad-hearted, gracious, and merciful words of well-done. Criticism of our wives and children cuts far deeper than we know. • The starting point for being a great dad is to learn to love the things that God loves: justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matthew 23:23).
