The only people who don’t find freedom are the ones that don’t recognize that they need help

Repentance is not confession
Repentance includes confession
It’s possible to confess and not repent
Repentance is not turn from your sin
It can include that, but that is not the strict definition in the original greek
Meta-noi-uh- meta means to change
Noi-uh means mind
Repentance means to change your mind, change your thinking
I will confess to you that I eat too much sugar, I will confess to you right now that my candy drawer at home, and yes there is a drawer with candy that I segregate from the rest of the house, has a candy bar, some chocolate cashews (which I figured was slightly more healthy), some jelly beans, and probably a few others that I forgot about.
Confession is not repentance
I remember a time, coming off of whole30 when the idea of eating sugar would make me feel ill. Where it no longer had any attraction. My mind and body had changed it’s relationship with sugar.
To repent would be for me to go home and throw away all of my candy, and then take measures to stop buying more, and I’ll admit that I probably should do that. Maybe after some prayer at the altar today, I will.
But how many people who have a problem with food readily admit that there is a problem with the things you eat?
Sugar isn’t evil. That in itself might be controversal, but God still designed us to enjoy sweet things. But he did not intend for us to be ruled by it. The same could be said of most vices. God designed Sex. He made it. But our minds and culture have twisted it to the point of unrecognition.
God designed pain. It has a purpose. It is a warning of harm. But to crave and seek to harm yourself or others is clinically wrong. To not feel pain is such a debilitating thing that it can completely ruin your life. Modern day leprosy is the inability to feel pain. The inability to feel emotional pain, either yourself or others, is to be called a sociopath. Pain is good.
God made us to feel pain. There are things that we do, when we sin, that cause God pain. We are designed in His image, He can empathize with us to the point of feeling pain when we do things to distance ourselves from Him. Most of the time without even realizing that the actions we make are causing harm.
Who here has a cat? It is the fate of every cat to feel that unintentional pain caused by the ones you love most. In the dead of night, every cat owner has accidentally stepped on its tail and been jarred to full awareness and had their heart start racing when the cat leaps six feet into the air and lets out a yeowling screech loud enough to wake the neighbors when you accidentally step on its tail.
Here’s your reminder that repentance is not confession
every Dog owner has a different way of thinking about the relationship between food and the floor. I remember visiting someone with a small child, and they served their child a snack of cut veggies on the low coffee table. The child then moved that plate to the floor next to them while they played. I immediately had anxiety that this was inherintly stupid and wrong, but then I realized that they did not have a dog.
My mind has been changed in the way I think about such things. Even setting a plate of food unattended for any amount of time means that the food would be gone the next time I went for that plate.
To continue to do that without changing the way I think and do things would be considered stupid. Many would say that I would deserve to loose my meals to the animals without changing the way I do things. Yet how many of us repeatedly do things that allow the devil to come steal what is important to us time and time again. We easily admit and confess that we are doing something wrong. Yet we just keep doing it. We lose our time, our money, our health, our relationships because we refuse to repent. We refuse to change the way we think. You can’t change things you do until you change the way you think.
Romans 12 says to renew our mind, to change our mind
Reve 2 and 3, and out of 7 church letters, five of them are a call to repent
We all must repent
Repentance must be to God and others
I’ll say it again, our relationship with others affects our relationship with God
Mat 5:23-24 (leave your gift at the altar)
James 5:16 (confess your sins to one another)
The word for healing in this verse is different, it means free

Older brother uses absolutes
Absolutes are rarely true, and is usually a sign that you are lying. Most of the time to yourself.
All bondage starts with a lie
Adam and eve
The younger son wasn’t the only one in bondage
The older son was in bondage to bitterness, hate, unforgiveness, jealousy, envy.
He said that he had NEVER been given a young goat, which is already a lie.
Look back at verse 12, He divided his wealth between THEM
“The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the estate that falls to me.’ So he divided his wealth between them.
Being the older brother, according to jewish law, he got twice as much, he got ⅔ of everything the father owned
Some of you might not relate to the younger son, the prodigal, but you might relate more to the older, living in envy for others.
God you did this for them but not me.
You are a child of God
I want to remind you that you have been adopted into a new family
You are born again by the word of God, kept by the power of God
Sealed by the Holy SPirit of Promis until the day of redemption
You are a child of the one Who is seated in heaven
All things are under His feet
He’s given you authority over all the power of the enemy to tread on serpents and scorpions
Nothing shall by any means harm you
You are more than a conqueror through Christ
Who loved you and gave himself for you
And he always causes you to triumph in his name
Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world
That’s who you are
In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple.
Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
And one called out to another and said,
“Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts,
The whole earth is full of His glory.”
