Whose Image Are You Carrying?
Alternative:
Render Unto God What Belongs to God
Key Question:
If Caesar claims what bears his image, what does God require from those who bear His image?
Fallen Condition Focus (FCF)
Humanity often gives God religious moments while giving the world our true allegiance.
Big Idea
Because we bear God’s image, our lives ultimately belong to Him and must be rendered back to Him through faith, worship, obedience, and discipleship.
Proposition
Jesus teaches that earthly authorities may receive what is earthly, but God rightfully claims the whole person because we bear His image.
Transitional Statement
The question about taxes exposed something far deeper than politics—it revealed the question every person must answer:
Whose image do I bear, and to whom do I belong?
I. THE TRAP OF MEN REVEALS THE WISDOM OF CHRIST
(Mark 12:13–15)
Explanation
The leaders sought to trap Jesus politically, but Jesus exposed their hearts spiritually.
Keywords
Trap — to ensnare or hunt.
Hypocrisy — wearing a mask.
Subpoints
A. Religious enemies unite when Christ threatens their kingdoms.
B. Flattery often hides rebellion.
C. Jesus sees beyond our words into our motives.
Illustration
People curate perfect online identities, but God sees the heart behind the profile.
Application
Jesus is not fooled by outward religion, social media Christianity, or public spirituality.
God sees who we are when no one is watching.
II. THE IMAGE ON THE COIN REVEALS THE CLAIM OF OWNERSHIP
(Mark 12:15–16)
Explanation
Jesus asks for the coin.
The image determines ownership.
Exposition
The coin carried Caesar’s image and inscription.
Therefore it belonged to Caesar’s system.
Biblical Support
Genesis 1:26–27
Humanity bears God’s image.
Subpoints
A. Images reveal ownership.
B. What bears an image belongs to its source.
C. Humanity bears the image of God.
Theological Insight
Imago Dei gives dignity and responsibility.
Every human life has value because every person bears God’s image.
Illustration
A company logo identifies ownership.
Likewise God’s image marks humanity.
Application
Your value is not found in followers, wealth, race, status, or success.
Your identity is found in the God whose image you bear.
III. SIN DISTORTED THE IMAGE, BUT CHRIST RESTORES IT
(Mark 12:17 in light of the whole Gospel)
Explanation
Sin damaged humanity’s ability to reflect God.
Christ came to restore what sin corrupted.
Biblical Support
Genesis 3
Colossians 1:15
Romans 8:29
2 Corinthians 3:18
Subpoints
A. Adam distorted the image.
B. Christ perfectly reveals the image.
C. Believers are being transformed into Christ’s image.
Illustration
A cracked mirror still reflects, but imperfectly.
Christ restores the mirror.
Application
Salvation is not behavior modification.
It is image restoration.
IV. RENDER TO GOD WHAT ALREADY BELONGS TO HIM
(Mark 12:17)
Explanation
Jesus moves beyond taxes to worship.
Keywords
Render = give back what rightfully belongs to another.
Subpoints
A. God wants more than your possessions.
B. God claims your whole life.
C. Discipleship is daily surrender.
Worship
We render God:
our minds
our bodies
our families
our gifts
our future
Modern Application
Believers live under earthly governments but belong to a heavenly Kingdom.
We pay taxes.
We obey laws.
But our ultimate allegiance belongs to King Jesus.
The state may shape citizenship.
Only Christ rules conscience.
CHRIST-CENTERED CONCLUSION
The crowd came asking about taxes.
Jesus answered with identity.
The coin bore Caesar’s image.
But look at yourself.
Whose image do you bear?
You are not stamped with Caesar’s image.
You are stamped with God’s image.
Sin damaged that image.
The cross restores that image.
And one day Christ will complete that restoration when we see Him face to face.
The greatest question is not:
“What do I owe Caesar?”
The greatest question is:
“Have I rendered myself to God?”
Evangelistic Appeal
If you have never surrendered your life to Jesus Christ:
The image is marred by sin,
but the Savior restores what sin destroyed.
Come to Christ.
Repent.
Believe the Gospel.
Render your life to the One who made you.
Call to Believers
Believer:
Have you given God your Sundays but withheld your heart?
Your worship but not your obedience?
Your money but not your life?
God is not merely asking for a portion.
He is calling for surrender.
Prayer Points
Lord, restore Your image in me.
Expose every competing allegiance in my heart.
Teach me to render my entire life to You.
Conform me to the image of Christ.
Help me live faithfully under earthly systems while remaining loyal to Your Kingdom.
Make Jesus visible through my words and actions.
Closing Declarations
I bear God’s image, therefore my life belongs to God.
My identity is not in this world but in Christ.
I will render to God my worship, my obedience, and my life.
The image of Christ is being formed in me.
I belong to the Kingdom of God and live for the glory of King Jesus.
Through my words and actions, I will make Jesus visible.
