as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And do not bring us into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
1 Be gracious to me, God,
according to your faithful love;
according to your abundant compassion,
blot out my rebellion.
2 Completely wash away my guilt
and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I am conscious of my rebellion,
and my sin is always before me.
4 Against you—you alone—I have sinned
and done this evil in your sight.
So you are right when you pass sentence;
you are blameless when you judge.
10 God, create a clean heart for me
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not banish me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore the joy of your salvation to me,
and sustain me by giving me a willing spirit.

he knows we are dust, relationship doesn’t erase honor, in Winter Haven as it is in heaven, trust that God wants to give you not just what you need but enough to be generous.
we are going to break verse 12 into two weeks because I think there is just too much to really get at. But in the pattern of this prayer he wants us to confess our sins and ask for repentance.
When we talk about this in normal relationships we use different language then when we speak
Theologically we call this confession of sin or repentance but in normal day to day life, we call it an apology. And that may dymistify the idea. That’s what we are talking about. Apologizing to God.
But its the ongoing repentance that can be hard. So I want to look at it through the lens of Psalm 51
then he gets confronted and he repents.
Then he writes Psalm 51
He asks forgiveness
1 Be gracious to me, God,
according to your faithful love;
according to your abundant compassion,
blot out my rebellion.
2 Completely wash away my guilt
and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I am conscious of my rebellion,
and my sin is always before me.
He has shame and guilt. He is always seeing his sin.
Why is he always seeing his sin? That’s the shame cycle - it keeps us away.
The enemy wants you to feel that way.
But why is he able to break free?
Here’s what he realizes - he realizes that he can’t do it on his own. He can’t make himself better. He needs grace!
So what gives him confidence - well he knew that God didn’t just have love he had faithful love - say faithful love he didn’t just have compassion he has abundant compassion - say that - say abundant compassion.
Two phrases I want you to say: Say “Faithful Love” and “Abundant Compassion”
His performance was rebellion, guilt, sin
Look what it says about getting rid of his guilt
I want you to say faithful love
Through God’s faithful love, trouble with shame, trouble apologize because we think God will abandon us
through is abundant compassion
Don’t be afraid to Go to God with your sin because he doesn’t a little love - faithful compassion he has abundant compassion
[He can’t undo his SINS - he needs help!]

From now on doesn’t deal with the past.
What is he saying? He is saying that he can’t do it on his own. He can’t get rid of his guilt. What’s done is done. He needs God to wash it away.
The action being taken is by God on David
WE don’t need to be afraid because he is the one who does it - The enemy want’s you to be to ashamed to go to God.
The enemy wants you to try to fix it yourself.
But this is the whole basis of Christianity

But it isn’t just one and done - we keep on going back to God because we need real apologies for real relationship.

And to do that, we have to take ownership of our sin!

What it doesn’t mean - what it does mean
[GOD is the standard for righteousness]

He’s perfect in his love, his compasiion, his goodness, his faithfulnes, his love
we can go to him becasue we trade performace for grac
The only standard for righteousness is God’s standard of righteousness
The enemy wants you to avoid confession because it’s what everyone else is doing. He wants comparing yourself in a good way. He wants you to cut yourself some slack. nobody’s perfect.
He has a desire to change
10 God, create a clean heart for me

It’s a me problem
some of you need God to create a new heart in you today
He knows that salvation and holiness is God’s work. You can’t grow in a vibrant relationship with God without God. You need Him. It’s his work.
David want’s a God to continue to work.

This is ongoing.
Why do we need to continue to confess and repent. Because God is the one doing the work.
Is that your desire? do you hate your sin and want a new heart? Do you need a renewed steadfast spirit?
11 Do not banish me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore the joy of your salvation to me,
and sustain me by giving me a willing spirit.
What’s he saying - he is saying that our [Sin puts a STRAIN In our relationship with God.]
At the end of every service I say “when God thinks about you its with a smile on his face and joy in his heart.” You are God’s child and that is secure. But you can strain your relationship with God.
[When you live with UNCONFESSED sin, you are living a lie]
Restore the joy
If your spiritual life is one without joy, where you feel estranged from God, one of the things you need to ask yourself is do I have unconfessed sins?
Am I living by the world’s standards and just saying it’s ok?
Am I refusing to take responsibility of my sin?
Am I blind to my sin?
Now, unconfessed sin isn’t the only reason why you might lose joy, there are other times of difficulty and all that, but man, if you aren’t confessing sin regulalry and you are feeling down - I mean who are you kidding?
See, sometimes we don’t confess sin because we are living by our performance. Other times we don’t confess sins because we like them. And we would rather rebel against God then give it up.
Maybe today you need to get right with God.
Now I am going to show you why that’s so important
We pray for Mercy Hill (God would use you, grateful that he will use you, kingdom come - that we will be a place where people are impacted for the gospel, daily bread…)
Let’s pray that we will be good at apology
it takes away the sin and the guilt and we feel light hearted and then we go out and we live and conqure in that joy
13 Then I will teach the rebellious your ways,
and sinners will return to you.

Live in the joy of repentance
If this is the place we sin, it’s the place we should minister! Let’s have the joy of repentance fuel our desire to see the wrongs we’ve done in this community replaced with the Grace of God.
I want to be a church, so filled with the joy of forgiveness that we are commited to impact our community.
