Psalm 82
Walking into the “minefield” of legos…
Transition: This morning, we are walking into the “minefield” of politics because that’s what Psalm 82 is about. And at a time when “Christian nationalism” is a buzzword and politicians on both sides of the aisle are misappropriating Bible verses to defend their positions, it’s important for us to know what the Bible says about government…

Main Idea: We should expect our leaders to promote justice while we look forward to the reign of the perfect King

1. God commands governments to promote justice (Psalm 82:1-4)

Explanation: God holds rulers accountable for failing to promote justice. People are counting on them, and he’s reminding them of their responsibility. Today, as citizens with a say in our government, we need to seek a government that promotes justice…

Application: Today, as citizens with a say in our government, we need to seek a government that promotes justice…

2. Injustice creates chaos (Psalm 82:5)

Explanation: When governments fail to promote justice, disorder and chaos erupt. We live in a society today impacted by that chaos—distrust and resentment abound…
Illustration: A society deeply impacted by racism…

3. God will judge the rulers (Psalm 82:6-7)

Explanation: God will hold rulers accountable for injustices they perpetrate…
Illustration: Every ruler ever has died…

4. God will rule the nations (Psalm 82:8)

Explanation: Jesus Christ is the King of Kings. He will come again and rule the nations. Injustice will be no more…
Application: Seek justice today; celebrate the reign that is to come…
Conclusion: Let’s submit our lives to the King.
