1 My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments; 2 For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you.
3 Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 So you will find favor and good repute In the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your body And refreshment to your bones.
Most father’s find themselves wanting to give some sort of advice or wisdom to their kids.
Our Heavenly Father is no different.
1 My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments;
This is typically the common plead of a father to his kids.
It is easy for us to pick on our kids… but how many times do we forget HIS commands?
There is a blessing for our obedience.
2 For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you.
Now this is no promise to live a long life in this physical world. In fact many wicked people live long lives and seem to have all they want.
But it is one of a peaceful life.
Sin always leads to some form of anxiety… Not all anxiety is sin, but all sin leads to it.
Anxiety literally kills the mind, body, and soul
There is no rest to be found in it.
What Solomon is trying to tell his son is if you want a good life, keep my commandments.
3 Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 So you will find favor and good repute In the sight of God and man.
We are called to Love God, Love others, and make disciples.
We must always speak gospel truth…
Sadly many times we see where truth is used as a weapon to hurt someone.
We can say something true and it be used to stab someone, or it can cut in a way such as a fine surgeon’s scalpel.
When we pair kindness with truth we heal others instead of harm them, the truth still may cut and hurt, but instead of beating down it uplifts.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.
This is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible and they are very true
But most of us or so familiar with them that they seem casual
The translation here is very weak compared to the Hebrew. The word for acknowledge him used here in the Hebrew is Yada which means to know on the most intimate level.
George Kufeldt (Koo-felt) said it well in his commentary: We might paraphrase these words thus: “In all your plans, in whatever you do, live so close to God that your will is one with His.”The consequence of such close fellowship is that he will make straight thy paths. As in Isaiah 40:3, straight means “smoothed out, obstacles removed” (cf. Heb. 12:13). When our plans and paths are those which God chooses for us, he will provide for the fulfillment of our plans and the traveling of our paths.

This is a call for us to surrender all that we are to His will and to His ways…

When we find ourselves wise in our own eyes we are living in deep pride.
This same pride is what got man cast out of the Garden.
5 “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
We must constantly be placing our reverence in the Holy God for wisdom and not our own brilliant novel ideas.
We find eternal healing not in our own plans and ways but only in His.
We may still find hardships and aliments in this broken world, but there is a day coming for those that do follow Him, that we will no longer experience those either.
