THE LAMB, THE 144,000, AND THE FINAL HARVEST

Revelation 14:1–20 ESV

1 Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. 2 And I heard a voice from heaven like the roar of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder. The voice I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps, 3 and they were singing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders. No one could learn that song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. 4 It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins. It is these who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These have been redeemed from mankind as firstfruits for God and the Lamb, 5 and in their mouth no lie was found, for they are blameless. 6 Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. 7 And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.” 8 Another angel, a second, followed, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who made all nations drink the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality.” 9 And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.” 12 Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus. 13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!” 14 Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and seated on the cloud one like a son of man, with a golden crown on his head, and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15 And another angel came out of the temple, calling with a loud voice to him who sat on the cloud, “Put in your sickle, and reap, for the hour to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is fully ripe.” 16 So he who sat on the cloud swung his sickle across the earth, and the earth was reaped. 17 Then another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18 And another angel came out from the altar, the angel who has authority over the fire, and he called with a loud voice to the one who had the sharp sickle, “Put in your sickle and gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, for its grapes are ripe.” 19 So the angel swung his sickle across the earth and gathered the grape harvest of the earth and threw it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. 20 And the winepress was trodden outside the city, and blood flowed from the winepress, as high as a horse’s bridle, for 1,600 stadia.

INTRODUCTION

Revelation 13 ended with darkness. The Beast had risen to power. The False Prophet had deceived the nations. The image had been established. The mark had been enforced. The world appeared to belong to Satan.

Then John looks again.

Revelation 14 is God's reminder that the Beast is not the main character of the story. The Lamb is.

The world may follow the Beast, but heaven follows the Lamb. The Beast gathers his followers through fear and deception. The Lamb gathers His people through redemption and truth.

Throughout Revelation 14 we see two groups, two kingdoms, and two destinies.

THE LAMB STANDING ON MOUNT ZION

Revelation 14:1 — "Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads."

The Lamb is Jesus Christ.

Throughout Revelation Jesus is most often identified as the Lamb.

The word lamb is the Greek word arnion (Strong's G721).

Meaning: Little lamb; sacrificial lamb.

This title points us back to Calvary. The One who now stands victorious is the same One who was slain for the sins of the world.

The Beast had a mark.

The Lamb has a people.

The Beast marks his followers.

The Lamb seals His followers.

The Beast demands worship.

The Lamb receives worship.

PROPHETIC INSIGHT

No matter how powerful the Beast appears in Revelation 13, Revelation 14 reminds us that Jesus is still standing. The kingdoms of this world rise and fall, but the Lamb remains.

WHO ARE THE 144,000?

Revelation 14:1 — "Then I looked, and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him 144,000..."

These are the same 144,000 introduced in Revelation 7.

Revelation 7:4 — "And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel."

The text identifies them as Israelites from the twelve tribes.

Many interpretations have been offered through the years. Some view them symbolically. Others view them as a literal group of Jewish believers preserved by God during the Tribulation.

Whatever position one holds, one truth is undeniable.

God knows those who belong to Him.

God seals His people.

God preserves His people.

The Beast cannot erase what God has sealed.

A NEW SONG BEFORE THE THRONE

Revelation 14:3 — "And they were singing a new song before the throne..."

The redeemed sing a song that no one else can learn.

Throughout Scripture, a new song accompanies a new act of redemption.

Psalm 40:3 — "He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God."

The song is unique because their testimony is unique.

They have walked through tribulation.

They have endured persecution.

They have remained faithful.

Now they stand before the throne.

PROPHETIC INSIGHT

Nobody can worship God for what He has done in your life better than you can. Your testimony creates a song that belongs uniquely to you.

THE THREE ANGELS

Revelation 14:6-7 — "Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim..."

This is one of the most remarkable passages in Revelation.

An angel proclaims the everlasting gospel to every nation, tribe, language, and people.

The word gospel is the Greek word euangelion (Strong's G2098).

Meaning: Good news; glad tidings.

Even in the midst of judgment, God is still extending mercy.

Before wrath falls completely, heaven issues one final call to repentance.

The angel cries:

"Fear God and give him glory."

God's heart has always been redemption before judgment.

BABYLON IS FALLEN

Revelation 14:8 — "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great..."

Babylon represents humanity's rebellion against God.

Historically Babylon was a city.

Prophetically Babylon becomes a symbol of the world's religious, economic, and political system organized apart from God.

The declaration is given before Babylon's complete destruction.

Why?

Because God's victory is so certain that He announces the outcome before the event occurs.

Isaiah 46:10 — "Declaring the end from the beginning."

PROPHETIC INSIGHT

The world system may appear strong today, but God already knows its end.

THE WARNING ABOUT THE MARK

Revelation 14:9-10 — "If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand..."

This is the strongest warning in Revelation regarding the mark of the Beast.

Notice the emphasis.

The issue is not merely receiving a mark.

The issue is worship.

The mark represents allegiance.

The mark represents identification.

The mark represents submission.

Throughout Revelation the conflict is always about worship.

Who will humanity worship?

The Beast?

Or the Lamb?

THE PATIENCE OF THE SAINTS

Revelation 14:12 — "Here is a call for the endurance of the saints..."

The word endurance is the Greek word hupomonē (Strong's G5281).

Meaning: Steadfastness; perseverance; patient endurance.

This verse reminds us that faithful believers endure.

The saints are not characterized by fear.

The saints are characterized by faithfulness.

The Church does not overcome through political power.

The Church overcomes through faithfulness to Jesus Christ.

THE HARVEST OF THE EARTH

Revelation 14:14 — "Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and seated on the cloud one like a son of man..."

This title points directly to Jesus.

Daniel 7:13 — "One like a son of man came..."

The harvest imagery appears throughout Scripture.

Matthew 13 uses harvest language.

Joel 3 uses harvest language.

The harvest represents God's separation of the righteous and the wicked.

The same field contains wheat and tares.

The same world contains believers and unbelievers.

The harvest reveals the difference.

PROPHETIC INSIGHT

God never loses track of His people. The harvest is not random. Every believer is known by name. Every act of faithfulness is remembered. Every promise of God will be fulfilled.

THE WINEPRESS OF WRATH

Revelation 14:19-20 — "So the angel swung his sickle across the earth and gathered the grape harvest of the earth..."

This section introduces the coming judgments that will be poured out in later chapters.

The winepress symbolizes God's righteous judgment upon unrepentant rebellion.

Many people struggle with these verses because they reveal God's wrath.

Yet God's wrath is not uncontrolled anger.

God's wrath is His holy response to persistent evil.

The same God who offers mercy also executes justice.

The same God who saves also judges.

CLOSING INSIGHT

Revelation 13 showed us the Beast.

Revelation 14 shows us the Lamb.

Revelation 13 showed us deception.

Revelation 14 shows us truth.

Revelation 13 showed us a counterfeit kingdom.

Revelation 14 shows us the eternal kingdom.

The message of Revelation 14 is simple.

Choose your King now.

Because one day every kingdom will fall, every system will collapse, every idol will crumble, and only the Lamb will remain standing.

NEXT SESSION PREVIEW

In Revelation 15 we will see the preparation for the seven bowls of God's wrath. The victorious saints stand beside a sea of glass mixed with fire. Heaven prepares for the final judgments. The patience of God reaches its appointed end, and the holiness of God is fully revealed.
