Heart Matters: The True Source of Our Actions

THE TRADITION OF THE ELDERS

Matthew 15:1–9 CSB
1 Then Jesus was approached by Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem, who asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat.” 3 He answered them, “Why do you break God’s commandment because of your tradition? 4 For God said: Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death. 5 But you say, ‘Whoever tells his father or mother, “Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple,” 6 he does not have to honor his father.’ In this way, you have nullified the word of God because of your tradition. 7 Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said: 8 This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 9 They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines human commands.”
Put God's Word above human traditions (vv. 1–3). Don't let habits or traditions become more important than what God says.
Obey God from the heart (vv. 4–6). Don't look for ways around God's commands—follow Him sincerely.
Corrupt priest allowed sons to take vow of corban which allowed dedication to God and J temple resources the would have used with parents.
Worship God with your whole life (vv. 7–9). God wants more than the right words or actions; He wants your heart.
Main Idea: True worship puts God's Word first and honors Him from the heart.

DEFILEMENT FROM WITHIN

Matthew 15:10–20 CSB
10 Summoning the crowd, he told them, “Listen and understand: 11 It’s not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth—this defiles a person.” 12 Then the disciples came up and told him, “Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?” 13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father didn’t plant will be uprooted. 14 Leave them alone! They are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.” 15 Then Peter said, “Explain this parable to us.” 16 “Do you still lack understanding?” he asked. 17 “Don’t you realize that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is eliminated? 18 But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander. 20 These are the things that defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person.”
Real impurity comes from the heart, not outward things (vv. 10–11). Don't focus only on appearances—ask God to transform your heart.
Following blind leaders leads to spiritual danger (vv. 12–14). Build your life on Jesus and His truth, not human opinions.
1st cent jews were plants of Lord. Like weeds.
Imposters.
Phar were hypocrites.
A changed heart produces a changed life (vv. 15–20). Our words and actions reveal what fills our hearts, so pursue Christ's transforming work within.
Heart transformation is real.
Main Idea: Jesus teaches that true purity begins with a transformed heart, and a transformed heart changes the way we live.

A GENTILE MOTHERS FAITH

Matthew 15:21–28 CSB
21 When Jesus left there, he withdrew to the area of Tyre and Sidon. 22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came and kept crying out, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely tormented by a demon.” 23 Jesus did not say a word to her. His disciples approached him and urged him, “Send her away because she’s crying out after us.” 24 He replied, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came, knelt before him, and said, “Lord, help me!” 26 He answered, “It isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she said, “yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus replied to her, “Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you want.” And from that moment her daughter was healed.
Port cities and were denounced in Is 23 and ezk and jews viewed them as evil
Great faith seeks Jesus despite obstacles (vv. 21–23). Don't let silence, setbacks, or discouragement keep you from bringing your needs to Christ.
Humility trusts Jesus completely (vv. 24–27). Come to Jesus recognizing your need, knowing His mercy is greater than your worthiness.
Jesus ministered to Isr who were abuse by spiritual leaders.
Persistent faith is honored by Jesus (v. 28). Keep trusting Christ because He welcomes all who come to Him in genuine faith.
Main Idea: Jesus honors humble, persistent faith and extends His grace to all who come to Him believing.

HEALING MANY PEOPLE

Matthew 15:29–31 CSB
29 Moving on from there, Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee. He went up on a mountain and sat there, 30 and large crowds came to him, including the lame, the blind, the crippled, those unable to speak, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he healed them. 31 So the crowd was amazed when they saw those unable to speak talking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they gave glory to the God of Israel.
1. Bring your needs to Jesus (v. 29–30). Whatever you're carrying, bring it to the One who can help.
2. Jesus has compassion for people (v. 30). He cares about our hurts and meets us with mercy.
3. God's work leads people to glorify Him (v. 31). When Jesus changes lives, give Him the glory.
Main Idea: Jesus' compassion changes lives and brings glory to God.

FEEDING OF THE 4000

Matthew 15:32–39 CSB
32 Jesus called his disciples and said, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they’ve already stayed with me three days and have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry, otherwise they might collapse on the way.” 33 The disciples said to him, “Where could we get enough bread in this desolate place to feed such a crowd?” 34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked them. “Seven,” they said, “and a few small fish.” 35 After commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36 he took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. They collected the leftover pieces—seven large baskets full. 38 Now there were four thousand men who had eaten, besides women and children. 39 After dismissing the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.
1. Jesus cares about our needs (vv. 32–33). Bring your needs to Him because He has compassion for His people.
2. Trust Jesus with what you have (vv. 34–36). What seems small in your hands is enough in His.
3. Jesus provides more than enough (vv. 37–39). Trust Him to provide what you need and leave you satisfied.
Main Idea: Jesus compassionately provides for His people and is always enough.

Big Idea: True worship stems from a heart transformed by grace, highlighting faith and inner purity over mere compliance to traditions.
