FOUNDATIONAL TRUTHS

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
III. The Problem: Spiritual Immaturity
About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,
for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.
But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
A. Dullness of hearing—the congregation has become sluggish
B. Regression to basics—they need milk, not solid food
C. The call to maturity—trained discernment comes through practice
III. Principles of the doctrine of Christ (vs 1)
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

IV. Not Laying Again the Foundation (vs 1)
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
A. Leaving - Can confuse people.
a. Does not mean you forget
b. It is the opposite.
Illustration:
A builder pours a foundation once. He does not come back the next day and dig it up to pour it again. He pours it once and then builds on it. That is what the Bible means. Lay these six truths down once, settle them, and then build the rest of your life on top of them. You never throw away your foundation. You build on it forever.

C. What Actually Happened When You Came to Jesus
Before we lay the foundations, it helps to know what God has already done.
The moment you trusted Jesus, a lot happened all at once — even if you did not feel any of it. Here is some of what the Bible says is now true of you.
a. You were completely forgiven
Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
b. You were made brand new.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
c. You were adopted into God’s family
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
d. God came to live inside you
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Key: GRACE
You did not earn any of this, and you cannot lose it by failing. It is a gift. The six foundations we are about to lay are simply how you understand and live out the new life God has already given you.
You don’t outgrow your foundation. You build on it for the rest of your life.
