Famous Mother’s
Anne Boleyn - Mother of Queen Elizabeth I
Maria Von Trapp - leading their nine children out of Nazi occupied Austria
Eve - Mother of all the Living
Today we are going to look at seven mother’s from scripture.
Let’s Pray
#1 Eve
Genesis 3:20 NASB95
Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living.
Let’s talk the mother of all life - Eve
So not only was Eve the mother of the living - she was also the mother of the first murderer, not a title a mother wants to have.
Genesis 3:20 NASB95
Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living.
Genesis 3:20
Genesis 3:20 NASB95
Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living.
What a great compliment for a woman - the mother of all the living.
She is not remembered as the mother of the first murderer, but the mother of all the living.
Such a better suited title for the first mother of mankind.
#2 Hagar & Ishmael
, 12-15
, 12-15
Genesis 16:1–4 NASB95
Now Sarai, Abram’s wife had borne him no children, and she had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar. So Sarai said to Abram, “Now behold, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my maid; perhaps I will obtain children through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. After Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram’s wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife. He went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her sight.
Genesis 16:12–15 NASB95
“He will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, And everyone’s hand will be against him; And he will live to the east of all his brothers.” Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?” Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
Genesis 16:12-15
Genesis 16:12–15 NASB95
“He will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, And everyone’s hand will be against him; And he will live to the east of all his brothers.” Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?” Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
Genesis
Ishmael - the father of the Palestinians - the father of conflict.
We never know the extent of God’s plans for our children, but we can certainly pray for them.
Ishmael - the father of the Palestinians - the father of conflict.
We can pray for their future spouses, that God will protect them.
#3 Sarah and Isaac
Genesis 21:1–3 NASB95
Then the Lord took note of Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had promised. So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which God had spoken to him. Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.
Childlessness is a painful experience. We have three couples in our church right now that are bearing the pain of not being able to have children.
Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are tough days for couples that are unable to have children.
I talked with one pastor last week that decided to not even preach a Mother’s Day sermon because the pain was too intense. Pray for those that are experiencing this pain today. Pray for the ladies that stayed home from church today because the pain of not having children was too much.
The story of Sarah, Abraham, and Isaac can bring hope to that pain so can the story of Isaac and Rebekah.
#4 Rebekah, Esau & Jacob
Genesis 25:21–30 NASB95
Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived. But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it is so, why then am I this way?” So she went to inquire of the Lord. The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger.” When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau. Afterward his brother came forth with his hand holding on to Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them. When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents. Now Isaac loved Esau, because he had a taste for game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was famished; and Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished.” Therefore his name was called Edom.
I love these twins - fighting in the womb, fighting in life, two nations. The plans that God had for these two men are amazing. The tricks and games played between them to steal birthrights. Of course, I love the skillful hunter as well.
Genesis 25:21 NASB95
Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived.

2. Hagar - Son Ishmael
#5 Jochebed and Moses
genesis 16:1-4, 15
Genesis 16:12–15 NASB95
“He will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, And everyone’s hand will be against him; And he will live to the east of all his brothers.” Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?” Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
Genesis 16:15 NASB95
So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
3. Sarah mother of Isaac
Exodus 2:1-6
Exodus 2:1–6 NASB95
Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi. The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a wicker basket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to find out what would happen to him. The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the Nile, with her maidens walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid, and she brought it to her. When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”
Exodus 2:1–2 NASB95
Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi. The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful, she hid him for three months.
Exodus
Exodus 2:1-
A woman of faith.
Could you put your three month old in a basket and push him into a river?
Can you imagine what that would have felt like?
How many prayers did she pray?
Moses mother, a woman of faith.
#6 Elizabeth and John the Baptist
Luke 1:5-20
Luke 1:5–7 NASB95
In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years.
Luke 1:5–20 NASB95
In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years. Now it happened that while he was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division, according to the custom of the priestly office, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. And the whole multitude of the people were in prayer outside at the hour of the incense offering. And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense. Zacharias was troubled when he saw the angel, and fear gripped him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John. “You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. “For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother’s womb. “And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God. “It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.” The angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. “And behold, you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”
God had big plans for John the Baptist. “He will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God.”
Luke 1:5–10 NASB95

God has plans for each one of us.
Maybe you are a teacher and are raising up the next generation.
Maybe you are in the health field and have taken care of the greatest generation.
Maybe you are in manufacturing business.
God has plans for each of us. We never know who we are going to reach and what a difference that will make in a single persons life.
#7 Finally, Mary and Jesus
Luke 2:6-7
Luke 2:6–7 NASB95
While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Mary had the greatest child in all of human history - our Saviour, our Messiah, Jesus Christ.
Jesus shows us the example of how to love our mother’s, how to honor them.
Exodus 20:12
Exodus 20:12 NASB95
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
Colossians 3:20
Colossians 3:20 NASB95
Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.
Colosians 3:20
Ephesians 6:1-3
Ephesians 6:1–3 NASB95
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.
Conclusion
We looked at seven mother’s in the Bible. There are many more. Some with good kids, some with lousy kids.
The Bible is full of examples from all walks.
Today we honor moms, not every woman is a biological mother, but every woman is motherly. Today we honor you.
Let’s pray for those who lost their mother this year.
Let’s remember Kay’s daughters today, as they celebrate Mother’s Day for the first time without their mother.
Today can be a tough day, God recognizes our pain and hears our prayers.
But the greatest prayer that we can pray is, “God have mercy on me, a sinner.”
Let’s pray.
