Just as light is something, and darkness is just the absence of light, John will use that imagery here, and really in the entirety of the books of John, to describe good vs evil. John is going to use the light vs dark imagery here to describe the vertical and horizontal relationship. Now that we are in it, there is something about the writing style of John that is very important here, John is very circular. what we cover here today we will cover next week and in a couple weeks and even at the end of the book.
