Jesus Heals a Woman

Mark 5:21-31

Talk about how Jesus healed in the Bible a LOT and is still healing today (talk briefly about camp experiences but dive in more later.)

Read Mark 5:21-26

Jesus was often followed by crowds

Upwards to 20k at the big things

large crowds don’t mean disciples

Many people came for healing

Read Mark 5:27-31

12 years of constant bleeding (something like endometriosis)

She tried everything. She had nothing left.

Doctors (blood letting, weird rituals, etc.)

What did she do? Touched the fringe of His garment.

Kanaph: Hebrew word for “fringe”. or “wing.” God commanded Israel to wear tassels with a blue chord on their fringe (Kanaph) that served as a permanent reminder of his commandments and convenant.

Malachi 4:2 says that the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings. The word Kanaph was used here too.

She knew and believed that He was the Messiah, and was familiar enough with the prophetic texts and the levitical law, that she knew He would have healing power in His Kanaph,. And she believed all she had to do was tough it to be healed.

She would have had the verse commited to memory

Why did He ask who touched Him?

Jesus already knew who touched Him.

He wanted to draw her out so she could publicly testify about her healing.

To show the crowd- and her- that it was her faith that cause the healing, not a magical coincidence.

Jesus affirmed her healing so she could rejoin society

Jesus was demonstrating that He is more power than Mosaic law.

When women bled every month, they were considered ritually unclean under Mosaic law.

Couldn’t enter the temple (where God’s presence was)

Couldn’t participate in the community

Couldn’t be touched by anyone including family

She touched everyone when she pushed through the crowd, including Jesus

She came to Jesus alone, like she had probably spent most of her adult life

What did Jesus tell her?

He said her faith made her well and her suffering was over

Faith- Pistis; Active relational trust and allegiance; loyalty and fidelity.

Used to describe the unbroken allegiance a soldier pledged to their military commander or emporer.

Greco-Roman soldiers pledged their allegiance through a sacred, legally binding military oath (Pledge of Pistis.) They swore to faithfully execute commands, never desert their post, and fight to the death for their commanding general. Breaking the oath was considered treason against the state and the gods. It was a capitol offense.

Peace = Total healing; mentally, physically, and spirtually.

would have been something like shalom most likely.

It doesn’t mean what it means for us now. It’s not just calmness and happiness and butterflies.

Shalom meant complete wholeness. He was saying she wasn’t just healed physically, but she had been made whole entirely.

The only time Jesus addresses a woman as “daughter”

Thugater- Greak; daughter; highly personal and affecionate. A literal daughter/descendant.

Jesus was on His was to a 12 year old girl who was dying. The woman had started bleeding the year the girl was born

12 = The totality of Israel in the bible (12 tribes of Israel.)

The two women represent the entire broken nation of Israel.

He wasn’t just healing these women, He was showing everyone that what He came to do was much, much bigger than what they had seen so far.

They went to Jesus

What did He say? Their faith would bring the healing.

if God still does miracles today, how should that affect our walk?

God not only wants us healed, He wanted us to be WHOLE. He cares about our mental and spirtual well being just as much as He does our physical.
