Battle Against A Condemning Mindset

Series Setup

For years before D-Day, thousands of ordinary French citizens made up what became known as the French Resistance. They weren’t a conventional army. They were teachers, railroad workers, farmers, shopkeepers, pastors, students, and homemakers who secretly opposed the Nazi occupation.

As the Allies prepared for the invasion on June 6, 1944, the Resistance began carrying out coordinated missions behind enemy lines:

They sabotaged railroad tracks so German reinforcements couldn’t reach Normandy quickly.

They cut telephone and telegraph lines, disrupting German communication.

They destroyed bridges and fuel depots.

They gathered intelligence on German troop movements and coastal defenses.

They guided downed Allied pilots to safety.

They spread misinformation and confusion.

When the Allied troops finally landed on the beaches, they weren’t fighting only on the shoreline. An invisible battle had already weakened the enemy from the inside. The soldiers could see bullets flying across the beach, but they couldn’t see the thousands of courageous people working in villages, forests, and railroad stations who had been preparing the way for months.

That sets up a powerful spiritual truth:

“The greatest battle is often the one you cannot see.”

Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

The beaches of Normandy were the visible battlefield. But the victory began long before anyone stepped onto the sand. In the same way, what we see in our lives—fear, temptation, anger, condemnation, broken relationships—is often just the visible evidence of an invisible war. If we only fight what we can see, we’ll lose the battle that’s really being fought.”

That ties in beautifully with your series. Each week’s topic is really a “behind enemy lines” battle:

Condemnation – The enemy attacks your identity.

Fleshly thinking – The enemy attacks your mind.

Sinful habits – The enemy attacks your obedience.

Together – The enemy attacks unity.

Fear – The enemy attacks your confidence as God’s child.

Spiritual complacency – The enemy attacks your passion.

Self-reliance – The enemy attacks your dependence on the Holy Spirit.

You could close the introduction with this challenge:

“This series is called Battleground because whether you realize it or not, you’re already in a war. The question isn’t whether you’re fighting. The question is whether you know who the real enemy is. If Satan can convince us that our spouse is the enemy, our coworker is the enemy, the culture is the enemy, or our circumstances are the enemy, we’ve already lost. But when we recognize the unseen battle and learn to walk in the Spirit, God gives us everything we need not just to survive—but to stand firm and overcome.”

What is condemnation? A sentence of guilty or open criticism of someone or some thing .

Separate the sin and you.

Sin/Flesh/Death

Specifically Romans 7:24–25 “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.”

I was a slave to sin, but now I am under grace THEREFORE there is no condemnation \

This addresses the current reality. Condemnation is not just a future sentence to hell, it is also a present state of mind

If you live under constant threat then you will live a life of fear, paranoia, and slavery

No Condemnation

Literal translation- zero penalty

Legal terminology that means a final decision with no appeal.

In Christ Jesus

This is not universal- it is for those who have a relationship with Christ

Because Jesus has paid the price

If the price is not good enough for any one sin it is not good enough for any sin!

No Condemnation is not a Feeling- It is a Decision

1 John 3:20 “for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.”

Sometimes is takes our feelings time to catch up to our reality

Just because you are free does not mean that Satan will not stop accusing you

Revelation 12:10 “And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.”

Just because someone says something about you does not make it true.

How do we fight against a Condemning Mindset

Confess your sin as specifically as possible

This can be awkward and not feel good- no one likes talking about their sin

Proverbs 28:13 “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”

If it is confessed specially it cannot be held against you generally

Submit to God

James 4:7 “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

You have a choice in this battle who you are going to listen to and follow.

Submission to God is not just obeying his commands. It is also believing what he says

John 1:12 “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,”

Colossians 3:12 “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,”

Jeremiah 31:3 “. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.”

Psalm 139:14 “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”

Practice Gospel Self-Talk

Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”

The Gospel is good news

GOOD- if it ain’t good it ain’t the Gospel!

NEWS- it is a fact, not an opinion and not a feeling.

Is this drawing me closer to Jesus or pushing me away?

Does this thought agree with Scripture?

Have I confessed this already?

What does God say about me in Christ?
