24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
25 “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
26 “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
27 “For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds.
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
The image Jesus disciples had when they heard this would be that of a violent, degrading death fit only for the lowest of lows in society.
He was calling them to a life of total commitment. Even unto death. A calling to a life of Scriptural Holiness.
But what is Scriptural Holiness?
Holiness is not something to be received in a meeting; it is a life to be lived and to be lived in detail.

Some Christians sow to the flesh every day and wonder why they do not reap holiness. Holiness is a harvest; whether we reap it or not depends almost entirely on what and where we sow.

It is a reverence of God and recognition of our own sin like we find in Isaiah 6:5

It is a repentant heart like we see in David as he writes Psalm 51:10
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
One who also prays for the Lord to give us clean hands and pure hearts, not lifting our souls to another as found in Psalms 24:4
One who seeks first the Kingdom in all things, one who strives to endure unto the end, one who like Joseph says “how can I sin against my God?”
AND most importantly one who…
37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ —39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

We love a good romance, and love the term I would die for her, or I would die for that…
What are you willing to Die for?
What makes the Judao-Christian faith so different is that our God died for our salvation not the other way around
and His followers are not only willing died but countless of them have for the faith.
26 “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
There are two questions in this verse
What will a man gain and what can a man buy his soul for?
In this life we are taught to work hard to get a head, to get new toys, new house, new car, peoples opinions…
At the end of the day what does it matter?
I used to say you never see a hearse pulling a uhaul… well I saw one the other day-don’t know where they were going or what was in it but it was there.
What does the riches of this world matter if you die alone, a cold and lonely miser?
Despite what Disney says, haven is not our default destination… Hell is unless we repent and turn to Jesus.
Now for the second question…
What can a man buy his soul with? Nothing but the Blood of Jesus!
27 “For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds.
We all will one day stand before that righteous judge named Jesus and either hear well done or depart from me
