Israel in the Old Testament

Promise To Abraham

God called Abraham out of Ur and promised him land and seed. Genesis 13:14–16 “The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your descendants forever. “I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your descendants can also be numbered.”

The Seed is Christ Galatians 3:16 “Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.”

The land is heavenly Canaan Hebrews 11:10 “for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.” , Hebrews 11:16 “But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.”

These were spiritual promises given to a spiritual person - Abraham

These basic promises given to Abraham were passed on to those who rightfully inherited the blessings of Abraham

The promised did not go to Ishmael, even though he was a son of Isaac; he was not of faith.

They did not go to Esau, even though he was a sone of Isaac; he was not of faith

They were spiritual promises and could be given only to a spiritual people

The Promise to Jacob

Isaac received the covenant promise through Abraham. Thus he was the inheritor of the promise of the Seed (Christ).
