A Sacrifice is Needed

Burnt Offerings were about:

Cost/Death - Burnt Offerings were a sacrifice, not a gift; they were costly.

Genesis 4:3–4 “In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering,”

Atonement/Forgiveness - All the Old Testament sacrifices pointed forward to the one atoning sacrifice of Christ for us who need forgiveness, who need a substitute for atonement.

2 Corinthians 5:21 “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

There is a sense in which Christ on the cross was the most filthy and grotesque person in the history of the world. In and of Himself, He was a lamb without blemish—sinless, perfect, and majestic. Worship -

Response - Burnt offerings, like all true worship is a response to God’s love and forgiveness.

Genesis 8:20–21 “Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done.

2 Corinthians 2:14–15 “But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing,”

A Living, Proving, Sacrifice

Isaiah 48:10 “Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction.”

Romans 12:1–2 “1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Spiritual worship paradoxically unites spirit and body rather than opposing them. The Greek term for spiritual worship (logikos) relates to reason and truth, emphasizing worship that is genuine and rational—“the worship offered by mind and heart.” This integration means every dimension of life becomes worship, eliminating distinctions between sacred and secular so that work itself—whether as mechanic or artist—constitutes holy service.

Isaac stayed on the altar. Christ stayed on the cross. We are invited to follow these steps; being unconformed to this world and proving the faith God produces in followers of Christ.
