This year marks an historic moment in our nation’s story.
Two hundred and fifty years ago, a declaration was signed that changed the course of history. A group of men declared that liberty was worth the cost, that tyranny should be resisted, and that human rights came not from government, but from our Creator.
For 250 years this nation has known blessings, victories, hardships, wars, revivals, failures, prosperity, sacrifice, and mercy.
We thank God for every grace He has shown.
We thank God for freedoms many around the world still long for.
We thank God for those who served, sacrificed, and gave their lives.
We thank God for the churches that preached the gospel, the families that built communities, and the generations who labored before us.
But if we are honest this morning, celebration is mixed with concern.
Many people feel uneasy about the future.
There is division in the land.
Confusion in the culture.
Distrust in institutions.
Fear in many hearts.
Anger in many conversations.
Moral compromise.
Spiritual apathy.
People ask, “What is happening to America?”
But I believe the deeper question is this:
What is happening to the people of God in America?
Because whenever a nation is troubled, the church must first look inward before it points outward.
That brings us to one of the most quoted and most needed verses in moments like this.
2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV
14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

God Begins with His People

Notice how the verse starts.
If my people...
God does not begin with the pagan nations. He does not begin with the corrupt leaders. He does not begin with the immoral culture.
He begins with His people.
That means when a society is broken, the first question is not merely what sinners are doing.
The first question is what saints are neglecting.
It is easy to blame:
Washington
Hollywood
Schools
Media
Culture
But God says, “My people first.”
Judgment often exposes prayerlessness in the church.
Decay in culture often reveals drift in God’s house.
Weakness in the nation often mirrors weakness in the pulpit and pew.
If we want awakening outside these walls, there must be awakening inside these walls.
If we want revival in the streets, there must be repentance in the sanctuary.
If we want hope in the nation, there must be holiness among God’s people.
Church, renewal begins here.
It begins with us.

Four Conditions for Renewal

God gives four responses His people must embrace.

1. Humble Themselves

Pride is destructive in a person and in a nation.
Pride says:
We do not need God
We know better than God
We can fix ourselves
We are strong enough alone
Humility says:
We need mercy
We need wisdom
We need forgiveness
We need God
America has many strengths.
But strength without humility becomes arrogance.
Blessing without humility becomes entitlement.
Freedom without humility becomes rebellion.
The church must lead in humility.
Not arrogance.
Not self-righteousness.
Not superiority.
Humility.
The kind that bows the knee before God.
The kind that says, “Lord, start with me.”

2. Pray

God says humble yourselves and pray.
Not panic.
Not rage.
Not curse the darkness.
Pray.
Prayer is an act of faith.
Prayer says God still reigns.
Prayer says heaven is not nervous.
Prayer says the throne is still occupied.
Prayer says what men cannot fix, God can touch.
Some spend hours watching the news and minutes in prayer.
Some know every headline but do not know the heart of God.
The church has never had political power equal to prayer power.
The early church changed the world with prayer, gospel witness, and Spirit-filled courage.
If the church today returned to prayer, things would change.
Families would change.
Hearts would change.
Churches would change.
Communities would change.

3. Seek My Face

God did not say seek My hand.
He said seek My face.
Many want God’s blessings.
Few want God Himself.
Many want safety, prosperity, comfort, and success.
But God calls us to seek relationship, nearness, communion, presence.
Do we want God, or only what God can give?
Do we love the Lord, or only the benefits?
National blessing without spiritual hunger will never satisfy.
What we need most is not bigger accounts, calmer markets, or easier headlines.
We need the presence of God again.

4. Turn from Wicked Ways

This is where revival becomes real.
Repentance.
Turning.
Not talking about sin.
Turning from sin.
And notice, God says their wicked ways, meaning His people’s sins.
That means before we talk about the sins of the world, we must deal with sins in the church.
bitterness
gossip
lust
greed
compromise
unforgiveness
prayerlessness
cold heart
division
hidden sin
Real revival always passes through repentance.
There is no healing without turning.
There is no renewal without surrender.
There is no awakening without confession.

God Still Responds

Then comes one of the sweetest words in Scripture: Then
Then I will hear.
Then I will forgive.
Then I will heal.
That means God is not indifferent.
God is not absent.
God is not powerless.
God still hears praying people.
God still forgives repentant people.
God still heals broken places.
He can heal hearts.
Heal homes.
Heal churches.
Heal communities.
Heal what sin has scarred.
Heal what division has broken.
Heal what fear has damaged.
Some people speak as if everything is hopeless.
But hopelessness is never the language of believers.
As long as God reigns, hope remains.
As long as Christ is risen, hope remains.
As long as grace is offered, hope remains.

Our Ultimate Hope Is Not a Nation

Now hear me clearly.
Love your country.
Be grateful for freedom.
Honor those who served.
Teach history honestly.
Pray for leaders.
Be a responsible citizen.
But do not place messianic hope in any nation.
No nation can bear that weight.
Babylon rose and fell.
Rome rose and fell.
Empires come and go.
Flags change.
Borders move.
Governments rise and governments fade.
But Jesus Christ reigns forever.
America celebrates 250 years.
Christ’s kingdom is everlasting.
The Constitution is important.
The cross is greater.
The flag matters.
The gospel matters more.
Our deepest identity is not political.
It is spiritual.
As believers we are citizens of heaven.
That means when earthly things shake, we belong to an unshakable kingdom.

Next Steps

Maybe the most patriotic act you can do this July is not just wave a flag.
Maybe it is bow a knee.
Maybe the greatest gift you can give this nation is not another angry argument.
Maybe it is earnest prayer.
Maybe what America needs most is not louder voices.
Maybe it needs holier people.
Maybe what our land needs most is not a new strategy.
Maybe it needs an old revival.
So today let us thank God for 250 years.
But let us ask Him for mercy for the years ahead.
Let us ask Him to awaken His church.
Strengthen families.
Save the lost.
Restore truth.
Send revival.

Invitation

For Salvation

You may love your country and still be lost without Christ.

Repent and believe the gospel.

For Prayer

Today this altar is open.
Come pray for:
your children
your grandchildren
your church
our leaders
