The Way Up Is Down
1 Peter 5:1-11
1 Peter 5:1-11
1To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness
of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be
revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care,
watching over them—not because you must, but because you are
willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but
eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but
being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd
appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade
away.
1 Peter 5:1-11
5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your
elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one
another, because, “God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore,
under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:1-11
8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around
like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him,
standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of
believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of
sufferings. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his
eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will
himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To
him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
1. Clothed in Humility
5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit
yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves
with humility toward one another...
“...thousands of humans have been brought to think
that humility means pretty women trying to believe they
are ugly and clever men trying to believe they are fools.
And since what they are trying to believe may, in some
cases, be manifest nonsense, they cannot succeed in
believing it and we have the chance of keeping their
minds endlessly revolving on themselves in an effort to
achieve the impossible.”
-C.S. Lewis

but shows favor to the humble.”

Grace
Unmerited Favor:
receiving what we do not deserve
Divine Empowerment
1 Corinthians 15:10
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me
was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of
them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.
1. Under His Hand
1 Peter 5:6-7
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of
God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all
your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
What a wonderful phrase
Ain't no passing craze
It means no worries for the rest of your days
It's our problem-free philosophy
Practical Handles
1. Humble yourself before the Lord daily
2. Stop comparing
3. Serve (Mark 10:43-45)
4. In your suffering, turn to Jesus
5. Set your eyes on eternity (2 Cor. 4:17)
Philippians 2:5-11
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
Philippians 2:5-11
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
