The Shepherd Nobody Sees

Called. Changed. Commissioned.

Psalm 78:70–72 “He chose David his servant and took him from the sheepfolds; from following the nursing ewes he brought him to shepherd Jacob his people, Israel his inheritance. With upright heart he shepherded them and guided them with his skillful hand.”

Introduction

Psalm 78 subtitle is Tell the Coming Generation

The text says God chose David by calling David from the pasture. That choice became God’s call of David. God changed David into a man after His own heart. Only then, God commissioned David to shepherd His people.

Proposition: God prepares faithful shepherds by calling them, changing them, and commissioning them to care for His people.

The God who prepared David is still preparing every shepherd He calls today.

Today we celebrate more than the completion of a program. We celebrate the faithfulness of God. Every lesson, every assignment, every sacrifice, and every mile traveled brought you to this moment. Yet today's celebration is not the finish line. It is another beginning. God is still preparing the shepherds He intends to use for His glory.

Most people remember David the king. Psalm 78 reminds us of David the shepherd. Before Israel ever saw David, God saw him. God sees shepherds long before people do. Before David ever led a nation, he faithfully cared for sheep. Before God entrusted David with His people, God was quietly preparing David in the pasture. This morning I want us to meet the shepherd nobody saw, except God.

And the shepherd nobody saw … is often the shepherd God is preparing.

GOD CALLS A SHEPHERD (vv. 70-71)

Psalm 78:70–71 “He chose David his servant and took him from the sheepfolds; from following the nursing ewes he brought him to shepherd Jacob his people, Israel his inheritance.”

God calls ordinary people.

David was a shepherd before he became a king.

God saw what others overlooked.

God delights in using humble servants.

God's call begins with grace rather than greatness.

God's call invites a response of faith and obedience.

David left the pasture when God directed him.

Every genuine call requires a willing response.

God prepares leaders in hidden places.

The pasture became David's place of preparation.

Sheep taught David patience.

Solitude taught David dependence upon God.

God often accomplishes His deepest work where no one is watching.

Hidden faithfulness prepares visible usefulness.

Faithfulness - obedience over a long period of time.

Waiting is often God's training ground.

God prepares servants before He promotes servants.

David learned to follow before he learned to lead.

Faithfulness always comes before fruitfulness.

God rarely calls prepared people.

He prepares the people He calls.

God never wastes a season of preparation.

The lessons you learned before ministry often become the lessons that sustain you in ministry.

Many pastors across Botswana faithfully serve small churches. Some preach beneath a tree. Others meet in a classroom or a simple building. Most people will never know their names. Yet God knows every sermon they preach. He sees every prayer they offer. He remembers every visit they make.

David also served where few people noticed him. He cared for sheep long before he cared for Israel. God used the pasture to prepare the shepherd.

He still does the same today. Some of you may feel hidden. Some may feel overlooked. Some may wonder whether your labor matters. Take courage. The same God who prepared David is preparing you. Never mistake God's preparation for God's absence.

Application.

Do not underestimate small beginnings.

God often begins His greatest works in the smallest places.

Trust God in seasons of waiting.

Faithfully shepherd the people God has already entrusted to you.

Transition.

God's greatest work in David was not changing his location.

God's greatest work was changing David's heart.

God did not simply prepare David for ministry.

(Slow down for emphasis, pause, then repeat).

God was preparing David for Himself.

Ministry became the overflow of what God was creating inside David.

Remember this:

God's call began in the pasture long before He released David to shepherd His people.

God still prepares His servants before He blesses the ministry.

God calls. God changes. Then God commissions.

GOD CHANGES A SHEPHERD (v.72a)

Psalm 78:72 “With upright heart he shepherded them …”

God shapes the heart before the hands.

He shepherded them with integrity of heart.

God mentions David's heart before David's hands.

Character sustains what giftedness begins.

Churches can survive a pastor with who has limited gifts.

They seldom recover from a pastor without integrity.

God shapes the leader's inner world.

Integrity means an undivided heart.

Wholehearted devotion to God.

Consistency between private life and public ministry.

Honest leaders continually examine themselves.

Pride becomes humility.

Self-reliance becomes dependence.

Healthy churches rarely rise above the spiritual health of their shepherd.

People often become what their leaders consistently model.

Your greatest sermon is the life you live from one Sunday to the next.

God shapes leaders through continual surrender.

Daily prayer.

Daily repentance.

Daily dependence upon the Holy Spirit.

Many villages depend on a borehole for clean water. People see the water flowing from the tap. They never see the water beneath the ground. Yet the hidden water determines the health of the whole village.

The same truth applies to ministry. Your church sees your preaching. They hear your prayers. They watch your leadership. They do not see your private walk with God. They experience its results every week.

When your heart stays close to Christ, your people receive fresh water. When your heart grows dry, your ministry begins to feel dry as well. Healthy shepherds usually lead healthy churches. Every week your people draw water from the well of your own walk with Christ.

Application.

Spend more time cultivating your heart than protecting your image.

Guard your walk with Christ more carefully than your ministry schedule.

Let the Holy Spirit search and change your heart every day.

Transition.

God prepared David's heart before He blessed David's hands.

God still prepares His servants before He blesses the ministry.

God calls. God changes. Then God commissions.

Godly hearts should always produce godly hands.

GOD COMMISSIONS A SHEPHERD (v.72b)

Psalm 78:72 “… and guided them with his skillful hand.”

God develops competent servants.

He guided them with his skillful hands.

Skill honors God because excellence serves people.

Our learning never ends.

God empowers dependent servants.

David's skill became fruitful because God blessed it.

Jesus told His disciples to wait before they witnessed.

Waiting cultivated dependence.

Dependence produced bold witness empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Ministry succeeds through God's power rather than our ability.

Training prepares your mind.

God’s word prepares our soul.

The Holy Spirit empowers your ministry, your hands.

Never allow yesterday's preparation to replace today's dependence upon God.

God sends compassionate shepherds.

Shepherds feed the flock.

Shepherds protect the flock.

Shepherds guide the flock.

Shepherds love the flock because it belongs to Christ.

Every Motswana knows the value of a good shepherd. A shepherd carries a staff, but the staff does not lead the cattle. The shepherd does. He watches the herd. He knows the path. He leads them to water. He protects them from danger.

Ministry works the same way. Books, certificates, and conferences are valuable tools. They cannot replace a shepherd who walks closely with Christ.

God's people listen to sermons every week, but they watch their pastor every day. Long after they forget a sermon outline, they will remember the example of their shepherd. Your life gives credibility to every sermon you preach.

Application.

Keep learning.

Keep serving.

Keep depending upon the Holy Spirit.

Keep pointing people to Jesus.

Keep glorifying God with all who you are, and all that you do.

Transition.

God prepared David before He released David.

He shaped David before He sent David.

God still prepares His servants before He blesses the ministry.

God calls. God changes. Then God commissions.

David became a faithful shepherd because God first shaped the shepherd.

CONCLUSION

Remember God's Work.

God continues to call shepherds.

God continues to change shepherds.

God continues to commission shepherds.

God always does His work from the shepherd’s inside out.

Remember the Retreat Theme.

Leaders must be prepared before they are ready for ministry.

Waiting upon God prepares us for greater witnessing for God.

Spirit-filled ministry grows from Spirit-shaped, Spirt-dependent hearts.

Healthy leadership begins with the leader's inner world.

Remember our Chief Shepherd.

David pointed beyond himself.

Every faithful shepherd ultimately points many others to Jesus Christ.

We are under-shepherds serving the Chief Shepherd.

The flock belongs to Him, not us.

Final Challenge.

Am I still growing?

Is my heart still tender toward God?

Am I depending upon the Holy Spirit more today than I did a year ago?

If my church becomes like me spiritually, will that please Christ?

Closing.

May people experience the heart of the Chief Shepherd through your ministry.

Today you leave this retreat better equipped than when you arrived. Give thanks to God for every lesson you have learned. But remember this. Your greatest Teacher still walks with you. The Chief Shepherd will continue to teach you, correct you, strengthen you, and use you as you faithfully shepherd His people. The same God who called you will change you. The same God who changes you will commission you. The same God who commissions you will carry you.

Therefore, leave this place with confidence, not because you have completed your training or because you attended this retreat, but because the God who called you will remain faithful until His work is finished in you and through you.

Never forget this: God prepares His shepherds to depend completely upon Him before He releases them to shepherd His people.

The Shepherd nobody saw became the shepherd a nation needed.

May God continue making each of us into the shepherd His people need.
