OPENING:

Church, I want you to picture something with me.

ILLUSTRATION:

You walk into your living room after a long day. You set your keys down, maybe kick off your shoes, and then.... you look up —and freeze.

Your television is tied to a chair. There is duct tape across the screen, extension cords wrapped around it like ropes, and a blanket thrown over the top. It is still plugged in, still capable of broadcasting, still designed to speak —but it is gagged and silenced. You would not shrug and say, “Well, that’s just how things are now.” You would say, “Who did this? How did this happen? What enemy came into my house and tied up what was meant to speak?”

That is exactly what has happened to truth in our world. Truth has been tied up, gagged, shoved into the corner of public life, and told to keep quiet. Truth has been kidnapped by culture, held hostage by politics, and silenced by fear. Truth has been replaced with feelings, opinions, and slogans that sound spiritual but have no power to save. And the tragedy is not only that the world has done this —the tragedy is that the church has often watched it happen and said very little.

We say things like, “You can’t say that anymore. People will be offended. You’ll get labeled. You’ll get canceled.”

SLOW DOWN

And slowly, almost without noticing, we start to treat truth like that tied‑up television —still technically there, but not allowed to speak. We still own Bibles, we still sing about truth, but we hesitate to actually say what God has said.

But truth is not optional. Truth is not flexible. Truth is not a suggestion. Truth is a Person —and His name is Jesus.

In John 14:6, Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Truth is not a concept we debate; it is a Person we either bow to or resist. And in John 8:32 He says, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” If truth is gagged, people stay in chains.

Today’s message is titled “When Truth Is Taken Hostage.” This is not a soft message. This is not a feel‑good talk. This is a prophetic warning and a pastoral invitation.

God is calling His people to wake up, stand up, and speak up — not with arrogance, but with courage; — not with cruelty, but with conviction and love.

Let’s pray before we go forward today:

Father, open our eyes. Break every lie. Expose every deception. Let Your truth thunder in this place. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

THE DIAGNOSIS – TRUTH IS UNDER ATTACK:

Truth has always had an enemy. Not a political party, not a generation, not a culture —a spiritual enemy. Jesus said in John 8:44 that Satan is “a liar and the father of lies.”

Lying is not just something he does; it is his native language. Wherever there is confusion, wherever there is distortion, wherever there is a fog around what is right and what is wrong, you can be sure the father of lies has been whispering.

From the very beginning, his strategy has been simple and devastating: do not destroy truth —distort it. In the Garden of Eden, he did not march in and shout, “God is a liar!” He simply asked, “Did God really say…?” He planted a question mark where God had put a period. He twisted God’s words just enough to make rebellion sound reasonable and desirable.

He is still doing it.

Today, truth is not usually denied outright; it is redefined. It is not rejected; it is repackaged. It is not attacked head‑on; it is slowly suffocated under layers of confusion. We live in a world where feelings are treated as facts, opinions are treated as revelation, lies are treated as enlightenment, and truth is treated as hate speech.

A man once told his pastor, “I don’t believe in absolute truth.” The pastor smiled and said, “Are you absolutely sure?” Even denying truth requires truth. The very sentence “there is no absolute truth” claims to be absolutely true. That is the insanity of our moment: people use truth to deny truth.

The enemy does not need to get everyone to burn Bibles. He just needs to convince people that the Bible is outdated, unclear, or optional. He does not need to get people to say, “There is no God.”

He just needs them to say, “God is whoever you want Him to be.” That is truth taken hostage.

And if we are honest, the church has sometimes helped tie the knots.

We have softened sermons so no one feels uncomfortable.

We have avoided certain passages because they might offend.

We have traded clarity for applause.

We have acted as if truth is a guest in our house instead of the foundation of it.

We have been more afraid of losing people than of losing integrity.

It is imperative that we STOP participating in taking Truth hostage.

THE EXPOSURE – HOW TRUTH IS TAKEN HOSTAGE:

Truth does not get kidnapped in one dramatic moment. It is more like a slow abduction —inch by inch, compromise by compromise. The ropes go on one loop at a time.

Truth is taken hostage by DISTORTION.

Romans 1:25 says, “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie.” Not rejected—exchanged. They traded it. They swapped it. They replaced it. Satan does not need to erase Scripture; .....he just needs to twist it.

ILLUSTRATION:

Think of a glass of water. To poison it, you do not need a gallon of poison —just a drop or two. That is how the enemy works. He does not come with a big red “LIE” label. He mixes lies with just enough truth to make them sound holy. “God is love,” he whispers—and that is true. But then he adds, “So He would never judge sin, never call anyone to repentance, never say ‘no’ to your desires.” That is the poison.

We see distortion when people quote half a verse and ignore the other half by taking it out of the context of it’s true meaning. When we preach forgiveness without repentance, heaven without hell, blessing without obedience, we are not preaching the gospel — we are preaching a hostage version of it. It sounds kind, but it leaves people bound.

Truth is taken hostage by DISTRACTION.

We live in the loudest generation in history. Our phones buzz, screens glow, notifications ping. We carry a world of noise in our pockets. Truth is not just attacked; it is drowned out.

ILLUSTRATION:

Imagine trying to hear a whisper in a room full of blaring speakers. You can see the person’s lips moving, but you can’t make out the words. That is what it is like trying to hear God in a life filled with constant noise.

We scroll more than we pray. We binge more than we read Scripture. We react to headlines more than we reflect on God’s Word. We know what every celebrity said this week, but we don’t know what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount. Truth is not defeated; it is simply ignored. And a truth ignored long enough becomes a truth forgotten.

Truth is taken hostage by DECEPTION.

Satan rarely shows up with horns and a pitchfork. He shows up with hashtags, slogans, and “inspirational” quotes that sound biblical but are not.

Satan whispers, “Follow your heart” —yet Jeremiah 17:9 tells us the heart is deceitful. Satan whispers, “Live your truth” —yet Jesus says He is the truth. Satan whispers, “God just wants you to be happy” — yet Scripture says God wants us to be holy.

OBJECT LESSON: Do in front of Kids Camera: Hold up a compass. Say, “This compass always points north—unless it gets too close to a magnet.” Bring a magnet near it and let the people see the needle drift. Then say, “North has not moved, but the compass has been influenced. That is what happens when truth gets too close to the world’s influence. The standard has not changed, but our sense of direction has.”

We start to say, “Well, maybe this isn’t so bad. Maybe God didn’t really mean that. Maybe times have changed.” The needle drifts, and we don’t even notice. Truth hasn’t changed. But we have gotten too close to the magnet.

Truth is taken hostage by COWARDICE.

This is the hardest one. Truth is taken hostage not only by the world’s lies but by the church’s silence. When Christians stop speaking truth, lies fill the vacuum. When pastors avoid hard topics, deception grows bold. When churches choose comfort over conviction, truth suffocates.

JOKE:

If your life goal is for everyone to like you, then don’t follow Jesus —sell ice cream. And even then, someone will complain it’s too cold, too sweet, or not dairy‑free.

We laugh, but there’s a point:

If our highest value is being liked, we will never be faithful to truth. Jesus never softened truth to gain followers. In John 6, He preached a hard message: Jesus feeds thousands, walks on water, declares Himself the Bread of Life, and many left while true believers remained. He did not chase them down and say, “Wait, let me rephrase that in a more positive way.” He turned to the twelve and asked, “Will you also go away?”

Truth does not beg for acceptance. Truth stands—even when people walk away.

THE CONFRONTATION – GOD’S PEOPLE MUST RESPOND:

Here is the good news: Truth isn’t losing. Truth isn’t fragile. Truth isn’t in danger of extinction. Jesus is still on the throne. His Word is still living and active. The Holy Spirit is still convicting and drawing people. Truth isn’t in trouble—but we might be.

Believers can lose their courage. Churches can lose their clarity. Preachers can lose their backbone.

And when that happens, truth is effectively taken hostage in our generation. God is not wringing His hands in heaven, wondering what to do. He is calling His people to respond —not with panic, but with repentance; —not with rage, but with resolve.

Truth must be rescued in our MINDS.

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” If our thinking is shaped more by social media, news cycles, and entertainment than by Scripture, we will not stand for truth—we will drift with the culture.

Think of glasses with the wrong prescription. Everything looks blurry, distorted, off‑center. You can walk, but you will bump into things. You can move, but you will misjudge distances.

That is what it is like trying to live for God with a mind shaped by the world. Renewing the mind is like putting on the right lenses —suddenly, reality comes into focus.

Truth must be rescued in our HOMES.

Parents, grandparents, guardians — if you don’t teach your children truth, — the world will teach them lies. The dinner table is a discipleship center. The car ride is a classroom. The conversations at bedtime are opportunities to plant truth deep in their hearts.

Truth must be rescued in our CHURCHES.

A church that avoids truth is not compassionate; it is complicit. A church that refuses to confront sin is not loving; it is lying. A church that silences truth to keep people comfortable is not a church; it is a spiritual hostage situation.

Truth must be rescued in our PERSONAL LIVES.

James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. [BUT] Do what it says.” Truth is not something we merely agree with; it’s something we obey.

Think of a GPS. You can agree that it is accurate. You can admire the map. You can say, “Wow, that is a great route.”

But if you never follow it, you’ll still be lost. The Bible is not just information; it is direction. Truth is not a theory; it is a path. Jesus did not say, “I am the idea, the truth, and the life.” He said, “I am the way.” Truth is meant to be walked in.

We release truth by SPEAKING it.

Hebrews 4:12 says the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two‑edged sword. A sword left in its sheath cannot win battles. Truth left unspoken cannot set anyone free.

We release truth by LIVING it.

Your life is the loudest sermon you will ever preach.

We release truth by DEFENDING it.

Jude 3 says, “Contend for the faith.”

We release truth by LOVING it.

Psalm 119:97 says, “Oh, how I love Your law!”

CLOSING: How Christians Stand When Truth Is Under Attack

We have this burden to tell the Truth, Because the Truth matters

Truth is under attack—not because it is weak, but because it is powerful. Truth is being distorted—not because it is outdated, but because it is dangerous to darkness. Truth is being silenced—not because it is irrelevant, but because it exposes lies.

This is not the hour for comfortable Christianity.

This is the hour for courage.

This is the hour for conviction.

This is the hour for truth.

Church, when truth is taken hostage, God doesn’t call His people to retreat into fear or frustration. He calls us to become people who practice truth — deliberately, consistently, and courageously.

So here’s how we stand firm when the world grows blurry.

We anchor ourselves daily in Scripture, not as a ritual but as our primary source of reality. Ten minutes in God’s Word will clarify more than ten hours of news, opinions, or social media.

Hold up the Bible Church, in days like these — the very birth pains Jesus warned us about — you cannot afford to treat your Bible as optional. When truth is blurred and deception grows subtle, you need the Word of God with you, not just near you. Carry it. Open it. Let people see it in your hand. Not as a symbol, but as your anchor. In a world losing its grip on truth, the believer who keeps Scripture close stays steady, clear‑minded, and unshaken. Don’t just own a Bible — walk with it.

We test every idea we hear — every headline, every trend, every cultural message — by asking one simple question: Does this align with Scripture? If it doesn’t, we reject it, no matter how comforting or popular it sounds.

We speak truth with grace, refusing to stay silent when lies dominate the conversation. — Not with anger. — Not with arrogance. But with the calm confidence of people who know what God has said.

We guard our minds by limiting voices that distort truth. That may mean reducing social media intake, stepping back from divisive influencers, or choosing to fill your home with Scripture, worship, and Christ‑centered conversations.

We stay rooted in Christian community, because isolation is where deception grows strongest. When believers gather, truth is reinforced, sharpened, and strengthened.

We practice discernment, asking the Holy Spirit to help us recognize subtle deception — the kind that feels compassionate, reasonable, or harmless but quietly contradicts God’s Word.

And we live truth visibly, letting our integrity, our decisions, and our character become a quiet protest against a culture that prefers comfortable lies.
