Which Type of Faith do you Have. Because Only one has Jesus Taking Over

John 2:1-11

Intro: When we were doing our study of the book of James. We talked about the type of faith that saves people. That its an active faith. That its a faith that bears fruit in a persons life. Its a type of faith that automatically shows change in someone. Looking at the greek Jesus used a specific word for Believest in regards to faith in Him. You see the greek has several words for the word believe. Only two are relevant to this conversation, and while they have similar meanings. They have vastly different implications. The first being Pistis, its a noun. Meaning to have faith or trust in something. The second being Pisteuo, which is a verb. To know something is true, and believe it is one thing. Satan believes Jesus is King, and the creator of the universe. Yet he refused to be obedient to Jesus. To submit to Jesus. To believe in something or someone and entrust oneself to that person. Well that changes that belief. In chapter one of John. The person of Jesus is defined as part of the God head. That he existed prior to time and the universe in its creation. That Jesus was and is and always will be, and therefore can be relied upon to We read who John the Baptist was, and what his purpose was in relation to the Messiah. Toward the end of chapter one in verse 50 we are let in on an idea that will be key to the rest of the Book of John. The idea that the type of faith that saves people is an active faith. A faith that puts complete faith in Jesus to move and work in your life independently. They type of faith implies a deep, and active commitment to a life lived in surrendering oneself to Jesus. And so in chapter two this idea is fleshed out in three different ways.

Transition: The first being, When Jesus takes over He gives attention to insignificant things. Two that, When Jesus takes over He chooses to use the simple things for His glory. And finally, that when Jesus takes over He changes the direction of known outcome, and perfects it into a better thing for His glory.

When Jesus takes over He gives attention to insignificant things Vs 1-5: Something we should acknowledge is that Jesus wasn’t caught unaware of things prior to performing miracles. He wasn’t surprised when He was told Lazarus had died. Scripture says Jesus grieved, but it wasn't from a position of surprise. Jesus wasn’t surprised when a hole was cut in the ceiling and a dude was lowered down through the roof. In vs 4 there are two things that are often times missed when reading this portion of scripture. One that Jesus was aware of the need, we should come to this conclusion automatically because He is the King! He is connected to His creation in ways we aren’t able to understand. Theologians for the last several hundred years have been wrestling with Vs 4 since it was translated into the english language. Because how does a perfect and sinless Jesus respond to His mother sounds disrespectful. To read Vs 4 another way with a modern mindset would be, Woman, what does this situation have to do with me? I do what I want. Yet here is an example of the english language failing us. Numerous sources I read regarding this interaction cites that Jesus referring to Mary this way would have been a term of endearment. Jesus is saying, you do not understand the situation. G. Campbell Morgan said it this way. This should help, “Mother mine, I know what you want, but you do not understand; there are limitations to your understanding of Me. Mother of my flesh, dear to My Heart. Mother under whose heart My life was enshrined when God prepared for Me My body. there are limitation to your understanding. You have been watching over Me all My years, and now I seem to be moving out into public work, you are anxious I will do something that will reveal the meaning of My personality and mission.” Mary is saying in Vs’s three and five, “Oh if He would only do something to prove who He is! Jesus fully intends to do the miracle. To provide the wine like He provided food for the Israelites every single day for forty years in the wilderness! Like He provides for us daily yet fail to see. Jesus is saying, understand I am concerned only about the Father’s will, the Father’s way, and the Father’s time. So in John chapter two vs 3, and 5. Mary must submit herself to Jesus will, His way, and His time.

Transition: In the practical sense. The submitting your personal life part of the Christian life is the hardest part for sure. Its the part most christians fail. We desire certain things in life. Later in John 14:13-14 this idea that as being a child of God. We get automatic green lights needs to be put into perspective. Two things one yes the desires of your heart will be fulfilled, yet it is operating under the idea that your heart will be in alignment with His spirit. And by doing so His desires will become our desires. But the second thing and maybe more important if we are asking for His will to occur. Well then it will happen in his time, and in His way. The second thing we see is that Jesus loves to use the simple things to accomplish His will.

When Jesus takes over He chooses to use the simple things, and changes the direction of the known outcome Vs 6-11: This tendency that Jesus has when being about the work of the Father plays out again and again throughout scripture. He uses the simple things. The poor, the uneducated. The under qualified. We have talked about this idea so many times. But its because all the glory goes to Jesus when awesomeness happens. Think about how the Levitical Priests would have made this happen. First they wouldn’t have saved the best for last, as the governor of the feast mentions in Vs 10, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. No Jesus chooses stone pots, water, and the servants. Talk about the unlikely and unsuitable. This tendency is in the very nature of who and what Jesus is. We see this in the Christian life. People apart from Jesus have no reason to not commit every sin under the sun. Apart from God’s word what would be the point in choosing to love someone who is mean and nasty to you? Apart from Jesus why wouldn’t violence be chosen every time? Like this is the way my mind works anyways. But I have instead chosen to crucify my true nature, and cry to Jesus every single day to make me like Himself. I chose to use a drastic analogy intentionally, because this is the miracle that Jesus does in people every day. Because just because I’ve never killed anyone doesn’t mean I don’t have the sin nature required for it. In truth every one has the necessary sin nature to commit every type of grotesque sin under the sun. This! This right here is the known outcome. How apart from Jesus we were all on a course set for destruction. A life lived for self gratification, and personal gain. Philippians 1:21. This idea that as I become less Jesus becomes greater. Not that Jesus isn't greater than I already. But instead the idea that when I become debased Jesus is able to use me like He used stone pots. That He might be glorified.

Transition: So the question then is have I partitioned out my life. Every one know what partitioned means? To separate out. Not necessarily equally. But instead the idea that so many times in a Christian life, we either intentionally or unintentionally allow Jesus to reside in a specific part of my week. On Sunday I will appear Christlike. Its all fake though. Jesus wants every part of your heart and week or He will choose to not be apart of any part of your life. This doesn’t effect your salvation, but certainly your relationship with Him. He will let you try to control your life. He will allow you to work problems out by yourself. But when you choose to allow Jesus to take control of a situation. When you don’t take control back when it doesn’t get worked out quickly enough. Awesome things happen.

When Jesus takes over He Will be Glorified VS 11: The point isn’t whether or not Jesus will be glorified. No Jesus exemplifies the Glory of God. Look outside and look at his creation and how intricate it is. Take an anatomy physiology class and you start seeing the complexities of the human body. Complexities of which doctors and scientist don’t fully understand. When a drug addict chooses to get clean, and cries out to Jesus for help. Because literally nothing else has worked to stay clean. Jesus is glorified. How you choose to glorify Jesus in your life is your own choice. If you choose not to give Him control of your life. You are the only one missing out. Missing out on seeing the coolest things happen. What do you to happen in your life? Have you given it to Jesus. Or are you still trying to work it out on your own?

Conclusion: There are so many times in scripture that when we look at them through a lens Jesus would give you. Have you asked Him to reveal His truth in His word. The english language can be challenging at times to understand the true nature of the word of God. Give Him control of it, and you will all of a sudden start seeing things and understanding things in His word you never considered. When Jesus will choose to glorify Himself.
