Walk in Love

Ephesians 5:1–14

Big Idea

The Gospel doesn't simply change what we believe—it changes how we walk.

Introduction

Transition from Chapter 4

Paul has been saying:

Put off the old self.

Put on the new self.

Now he asks...

"What does the new life actually look like?"

Three answers:

Walk in Love

Walk in Purity

Walk in Light

I. Walk in Love

(vv.1–2)

"Be imitators of God... and walk in love..."

A. Our model is the Father

"Be imitators of God"

Children naturally resemble their father.

Christians should increasingly resemble Christ.

B. Our example is Christ

"Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us..."

Biblical love is:

Sacrificial

Intentional

Selfless

Love isn't merely emotion.

Love acts.

Illustration

The cross is God's definition of love.

Before we define love by culture...

we must define it by Calvary.

Application

Ask:

Who am I imitating?

Does my love cost me anything?

Do people see Christ in the way I love?

Transition

Love always moves toward holiness.

Because Christ loves us...

He also calls us to leave sin behind.

II. Walk in Purity

(vv.3–7)

Paul now moves from:

Christlike love

to

Christlike holiness.

A. Put away sinful desires

Paul mentions:

Sexual immorality

Impurity

Covetousness

These aren't simply actions.

They're heart issues.

B. Put away sinful speech

Instead of:

Filthiness

Foolish talk

Crude joking

Paul says:

Replace them with thanksgiving.

Why?

Because our words reveal our hearts.

A spring produces whatever fills it.

A heart filled with Christ eventually speaks like Christ.

Application

Evaluate:

Entertainment

Conversations

Social media

Humor

Does it reflect Christ?

Transition

Holiness isn't simply avoiding darkness.

It is learning to live in the light.

III. Walk in the Light

(vv.8–14)

"You were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord."

Notice:

Paul doesn't say

"You lived in darkness."

He says

"You were darkness."

Identity changed.

A. Light produces fruit

Fruit of light:

Goodness

Righteousness

Truth

B. Light exposes darkness

Light doesn't create truth.

It reveals it.

God's Word does the same.

C. Light awakens

"Awake, O sleeper..."

The Gospel doesn't simply forgive.

It awakens.

Illustration

Turn on a flashlight.

The room changes because light entered.

Christ changes people the same way.

Application

Ask:

Is there anything I'm hiding?

Am I walking openly before God?

Am I reflecting Christ at school?

Would people know I'm different?

The Christian life isn't simply avoiding sin.

It is reflecting Christ.

People should not simply know

what you believe.

They should see

who you belong to.

Imagine walking through a dark cave carrying a lantern.

People don't admire the lantern.

They follow the light.

You are called to reflect the Light of the world.

Don't hide it.
