Who is John the baptist?
Luke 3:3 “3 He went into all the vicinity of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,”
Preaching repentance,
Baptism of repentance = I don’t want to repent just for my feet but the whole body.
Forgiveness of sin = is possible in the Messiah
Baptist is magnified with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus but there still needs to be repentance.
Matthew 3:11–12 CSB
11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove his sandals. He himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing shovel is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn. But the chaff he will burn with fire that never goes out.”
“more powerful than I” “I am not worthy” Do you see his heart?
wheat and the chaff
Matthew 3:13–14 CSB
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?”
Why is Jesus coming to be baptist?
Jesus has never sinned He has nothing to repent of no sin!
John was his cousin and he says Jesus don’t need to be baptized!
John tried to stop him. Why?
John didn’t understand what Jesus was doing.
John didn’t feel worthy to be the one to baptize Jesus.
John know that he was a sinner and Jesus should baptize him.
“yet you come to me”
There is a lot of us here today that feel the same way a John did in this moment.
I not worthy to do that LORD!
Moses, David, Peter, Paul, Women at the well
They all were used by the LORD in a mighty way.
Do you think you could be used by the LORD.
What seat them apart?
1 John 4:4 “4 You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
Philippians 2:13 “13 For it is God who is working in you both to will and to work according to his good purpose.”
Ephesians 2:10 “10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.”
Hebrews 13:21 “21 equip you with everything good to do his will, working in us what is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.”
Matthew 3:15 CSB
15 Jesus answered him, “Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John allowed him to be baptized.
Why did Jesus get baptized?
“fulfill all righteousness”
Jesus was identifying with mankind even though He had no sin. WOW!!!
Jesus also bared the cross that He didn’t earn!
Matthew 3:16–17 CSB
16 When Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased.”
Father, Son, Holy Spirit
