Before the Beginning: The Wisdom of God

Proverbs 8:22–31 ““The Lord acquired me at the beginning of his creation, before his works of long ago. I was formed before ancient times, from the beginning, before the earth began. I was born when there were no watery depths and no springs filled with water. Before the mountains were established, prior to the hills, I was given birth— before he made the land, the fields, or the first soil on earth. I was there when he established the heavens, when he laid out the horizon on the surface of the ocean, when he placed the skies above, when the fountains of the ocean gushed out, when he set a limit for the sea so that the waters would not violate his command, when he laid out the foundations of the earth. I was a skilled craftsman beside him. I was his delight every day, always rejoicing before him. I was rejoicing in his inhabited world, delighting in the children of Adam.”

Theme: God's wisdom existed before creation and is seen throughout His creation.

Big Idea: Before there was a world, there was God. His wisdom was present before creation and is woven into everything He made. Because God is wise, we can trust Him with our lives.

Transition

Every building has a designer.

Every invention has an inventor.

Creation also has a Designer.

Today's passage reminds us that God didn't create the universe by accident—He created it with perfect wisdom.

Background

Throughout Proverbs 8, Solomon personifies wisdom as calling out to people.

In verses 22–31, wisdom describes being present with God before creation.

This passage emphasizes:

God's eternal wisdom

His perfect design

His joy in creation

His delight in humanity

What does this passage teach us about God?

Point 1 — God's Wisdom Came Before Creation (vv. 22–26)

Teach

Before:

mountains

God already existed.

His wisdom wasn't something He learned.

God has always been perfectly wise.

Unlike us:

We grow in wisdom.

God has always possessed it.

Why is it comforting to know that God has never had to "figure things out"?

How does that change the way we trust Him?

Point 2 — Creation Shows God's Wisdom (vv. 27–29)

Notice the order:

God established:

the heavens

the horizon

the clouds

the oceans

the boundaries of the sea

the foundations of the earth

Nothing happened randomly.

Everything has purpose.

Scientists discover more about creation every year.

Every discovery points to incredible design.

Illustration

Hold up a smartphone.

Ask:

"Would anyone believe this phone built itself?"

Of course not.

The universe is infinitely more complex than a phone.

Creation points to an intelligent Creator.

Point 3 — God Delights in His Creation (vv. 30–31)

One of the most beautiful parts of this passage is that wisdom says it was rejoicing during creation.

God wasn't creating because He had to.

He created joyfully.

Verse 31 also reminds us that God delighted in humanity.

Think about that.

Before you were born...

Before your parents were born...

Before the world existed...

God already planned for people.

That means:

You are not an accident.

You have purpose.

God values you.

The Puzzle

Ask:

"If I shake this box long enough, will it eventually become a finished puzzle?"

No.

Someone must arrange the pieces intentionally.

Creation didn't happen by accident.

God arranged everything with wisdom.

Application

This week when life doesn't make sense...

Remember:

God sees what you cannot.

He understands what you don't.

The same God who designed the universe knows your future.

His wisdom is trustworthy.

Challenge for the Week

Every day:

Spend five minutes outside.

Look around.

Notice something in creation that reminds you of God's wisdom.

Write it down.

Then pray:

"Lord, help me trust the wisdom You showed in creation as I follow You today."
