When John writes these things for us to not sin, it is easy to turn into Bob Newhart and just say stop it! In ages past, the church seems to err on either side of the line, we are either constantly calling out sin without compassion, or pretending like sin doesn’t exist. Through the Second Great Awakening, there was and still is an emphasis on personal piety, meaning my relationship with God is my own, not yours. There is times in the Bible where we need to be very serious about unrepentant sin, but that isn’t the goal of “Church Discipline.” Any pointing out of Sin should be restorative in nature. Now how can we walk with God and continue to Sin? Let’s look at
