The short parable where Jesus speaks about the debt, two people had one with big one was small and they were both forgiven. Then Jesus asked Simon Peter, which one loved more and Simon said the one who had a bigger debt.
He who has been forgiven much loves much and he has been forgiven little loves little. Jesus was saying he could tell by the woman’s love for him that she had been forgiven a big debt.
And then Jesus could also tell by the Pharisees lack of love that he had not been forgiven much.
What about you this evening walking by on the boardwalk or stopping to listen have you been forgiven much or not at all?
The Phariseesclaimed he didn’t need to be forgiven much. He was a pretty good person.
But the woman was under no delusions. She knew she was not a very good person. So what about you tonight? Are you a pretty good person who doesn’t really even need God‘s forgiveness or do you see the weight of your sin tonight? Do you see your need for God‘s forgiveness?
Jesus said that this woman was anointing him before his burial. She was doing this in preparation for his death. And it was his death that was absolutely essential for her forgiveness. Forgiveness from God cannot come except by the shedding of blood. That’s why it was necessary that Jesus went to the Cross all the way to death and burial before rising again and ascending on high.
So there were two debtors one owed a large amount of money and the other owed a small amount both were forgiven who loved the forgiver more?
One person understood how much the Lord had done for them while the other didn’t think he needed the Lord to do anything for him. What about you tonight? If you’re walking by sitting here convinced that you’re a perfectly good person or even that you’re pretty good that you might have a few things God might need to clean up about your record, but overall you’re pretty good. Do you understand the weight of your sin the debt that you owe to God for the wages of death, the wages of sin that are death that you’ve been earning the debt of judgment God owes you for your sin? If you do if you understand what you’re sin requires, if you understand that before a holy and perfect God, you stand condemned then I do have then I have good news for you tonight. Because they’re truly is forgiveness to be had. Your great debt can be forgiven and the first step in that process is understanding the debt that you have before God.
Then the next step is to do what this woman did run to Christ embrace him, love him, trust him, and ask him to make his payment person account for your account. Ask him to make you a new person in the evidence of your forgiveness of you having been forgiven will show up and the love that you have for priced coming from your heart. Let’s pray.
