Every first Sunday we follow the instructions of the N.T. to have the Lords Supper (AKA Communion).
All are welcome to receive, unless you have not accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.
In several New Testament accounts we learn that Jesus instituted this communion meal, with His disciples the night before He was arrested and then crucified.
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many. Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
The Communion Meal Represents:
The Sacrifice of Christ
By the Breaking of His Body - represented by the Bread.
By the Spilling of His Blood - represented by the Wine (we use grape juice).
He did this For the remission of sins…so that our sins would be paid for.
And all who have accepted Jesus and His Sacrifice have been made clean.
It also represents the New Covenant.
The O.T. had a system of animal sacrifices, which only “covered” sins, whereas Jesus instituted a New system where His Death actually “atones” for sins…entirely wiping them out.
Jesus Christ accomplished what the blood of bulls and goats could not.
And it symbolically looks forward to the meal that we will get to partake with Jesus Christ in the future.
We will be in attendance of “the Marriage Supper of the Lamb” and have a meal alongside our Savior Jesus Christ.
But before taking this meal, a Word of caution from the Apostle Paul:
Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
If you’re not a believer in Jesus Christ, please do not partake in this meal, because you will heap up judgment for yourself.
If thats you, but you’d like to become a believer in Jesus Christ,
i’ll give you that opportunity in a moment,
and then you are free to partake here today.
For the believer, I urge you to resolve on any unconfessed sin between you and God prior to receiving this communion.
Recognize your sin, and
Repent from your sin and be cleansed.
Restore your relationship with Him today!
Would the elders and deacons please come up. We will bring the elements to you. Once you have received the elements, please hold them and we will all consume them at the same time. In the meantime, let us be in a state of prayer…
Let’s pray -
(1) Thanks for giving us the instructions and ability to partake in Communion as a church body today. May we be found faithful as we do what you asked us to do.
(2) That anyone here who doesn’t know you, but who wants to know you may accept you right now. Pray this along with me.
That I admit I am a sinner, which is why You had to Sacrifice Yourself for me in the first place, requiring me to be cleansed of sin/forgiven for what we have done. Please forgive me.
And by faith, not works, I accept your offer for Salvation…that I believe that you came to this earth, lived a perfect sinless life, and then died on the Cross for my sins, was buried for three days, and then miraculously Rose again to new life…and now sit at the right hand of the Father in heaven.
I understand that in accepting you into my heart and acknowledging you with my words, that I am now a child of God, and will be with you in heaven when the time has come. In Jesus’ mighty name I pray, Amen.
(3) Lord, as we pass these elements out, please connect with us each where we are at in life. Cleanse us of our sins, give us Confidence in our faith, and Connect with us personally…as we seek Communion, a closer relationship, with you! In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen!
“This is the body of Christ, broken for you” - Let us partake together.
“This is the blood of Christ, spilled for you, the New Covenant” - Let us partake of the cup together.
Let’s Pray - Thank You for Your (1) Sacrifice, your body and blood broken and spilled for us. (2) For instituting the New Covenant, fully atoning for our sins, and (3) Giving us the future expectation that we will one day be able to partake alongside of you, in Your Presence.
