Sermon Introduction – Judges 5

If you read Judges 5 for the first time, it can almost make you uncomfortable.

Deborah and Barak are singing. They're celebrating. They're rejoicing over the defeat of their enemies. And if we're honest, we might ask, "Why are they celebrating someone's destruction? Doesn't God love everyone?"

But if we stop there, we'll miss what this chapter is really about.

This isn't a song celebrating revenge. It's a song celebrating God's justice.

For twenty years, Israel had lived under cruel oppression because they had turned away from God. They had chosen false gods over the one true God, and as a result they experienced the consequences of their rebellion.

Then God raised up Deborah and Barak.

Here's what makes this story so incredible: Israel wasn't the stronger army. They didn't have the better weapons. In fact, the Bible tells us there were no shields or spears among forty thousand Israelites. Meanwhile, the Canaanites had 900 iron chariots the tanks of the ancient world.

Humanly speaking, Israel never should have won.

But Judges 5 reminds us that this battle wasn't won because Israel became stronger. It was won because God fought for His people.

God threw the Canaanite army into confusion. Their training failed them. Their weapons couldn't save them. And what looked impossible became possible because the Lord stepped onto the battlefield.

So Judges 5 isn't just an old victory song. It's a testimony that when God's people return to Him in obedience, God does what only He can do.

Today, we're going to see that this song teaches us three powerful truths:

1. The Battle Is Bigger Than We Can Win

Judges 5 ends with forty years of peace.

Because the hero of Judges 5 isn't Deborah. It isn't Barak. It isn't Jael.

The hero of the song is the Lord Himself.

Where I want My sermon to land.

Judges 5 is not primarily a song about Deborah, Barak, or even Israel's victory. It is a song about the covenant God who steps into impossible battles, fights for His people, and points every victory toward the day when the greater King, Jesus Christ, would win the final battle once and for all.
