Bible Intro

What is the Bible? Say: The Bible is real and true. God gave us the Bible so we could know Him. The Bible is filled with many books and stories, but they are all a part of one BIG story — God’s story.

What is God’s bigger story? Show teaching slide: God’s Big Story Review each part of God’s Big Story.

Creation: God is the one true God and He has always existed. He is the Creator of all things, including you and me. He is good, He loves us, and we are made in His image.

Fall: Adam and Eve sinned and disobeyed God. Sin broke the world, and people were separated from God. People could not fix their sin problem on their own.

Redemption: God sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross, to take the punishment for our sins, and to rise from the dead to conquer death. When we trust in Jesus as our Savior, our relationship with God is made right again through His grace, and He gives us new life.

Restoration: When we walk with Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit and learn God’s Word, He renews us. One day, Jesus will return to renew all things.

Where is Today’s Bible Story? Show teaching slide: Books of the Bible Say: This week’s story comes from the book of Psalms. Psalms is the 19th book of the Bible and found in the Old Testament.

Say: This story can be found in the book of Psalms. The book of Psalms is a collection of songs, hymns and prayers that were written during different times within the Old Testament period.

Say: This month we are focusing on the truth that God is good. Last week we learned about James and how God helps us love others. This week we will learn that God provides wisdom.

Let’s Find It in Our Bibles!

Open your Bible and show the kids the title page for the book of Psalms. Help kids turn in their Bibles to today’s Bible passage (Psalm 19:1–14).

Say: Let’s find the book of Psalms together. Remember, the front of your Bible has a Table of Contents if you need that. Next, we will find the chapter. Find the big number 19. The verses are the little numbers. Find the little number 1.

Teaching

PRAY: God, You are good and we need Your good wisdom every day. Teach us today to love Your perfect Word and to let Your truth be our guide in life. Amen.

Say: There are a lot of books you can read that can teach you something, but only one has the perfect, 100 percent true and holy wisdom of God—the Bible!

Now as we talk about Psalm 19, there are three words I want you to look out for: Declare, Trustworthy, and Redeemer.

When you hear: declare, I am going to point to you and I want you to say it back to me.

When you hear: trustworthy, I want you to put your hands together, like your shaking someone’s hand or giving someone a high five, showing you trust them.

When you hear: Redeemer, I want you to clap one hand over the other, like you’re putting money down on a counter.

Now let’s look at Psalm 19

If you turn to the middle of the Bible, you will likely open up to the book of Psalms. A psalm is a song, prayer or poem used in worshiping God. Many of the psalms collected in this book were written by King David. There are different types of psalms. Wisdom psalms celebrate God and His wisdom, and they also show us how He wants us to live.

Read Psalm 19:1

Say: The daytime and nighttime skies show us different facts about who God is. They aren’t words you can hear, but they send a message to everything God has created about His goodness.

Say: David wrote that the sun makes its entrance every day like a young man who runs a race with joy. The sun rises and sets as it heats the whole world.

Say: David explains that the law of the Lord is perfect—it gives us life! God’s words are true and trustworthy.

Read Psalm 19:7 directly from the Bible: The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

Say: God’s words make us wise. His commandments are for our good, to help us learn and grow. The Word of the Lord is so pure that it could never age or end. It will endure forever. The rules of the Lord are true, perfect and righteous.

Show teaching illustration: God’s Word

Say: God’s words are more precious than gold, even the best gold. They are sweeter than honey. God’s words give us instructions that keep us from danger. When we keep God’s instructions, we receive rewards that are better than gold. Who could ever know when they are doing something wrong without God’s help?

Say: David ended by praying: “God, please purify me from the bad things I do in secret. Don’t let any of my sins have power over me. Then I will be blameless and innocent. Let everything that I speak and everything that I think or feel in my heart be pleasing to You, O Lord, my rock and Redeemer.”

Say: Psalm 19 shows us the goodness of God. Nature declares His goodness. He is trustworthy, and He is our redeemer. In His goodness, He shares His wisdom with us.

He shares His wisdom by His word! His book!

Say: God’s law truly is perfect, and thankfully, God gave us His law to show us how to live. While the law of the Lord is perfect, unfortunately we are not. All of us have sinned, and because of our sin, our relationship with God is broken. But because God is so good, that’s not the end of the story. Since the beginning, God had a plan to send His Son, Jesus. Jesus, who is God Himself, came as a man and lived a perfect life so He could be the perfect sacrifice for us. He died on the cross, rose again, and through His victory over sin and death, we can now have a restored relationship with God and live out the purpose He created us for.

Conclusion

We can look at and appreciate nature

We can trust in God that He loves us and has a plan for us.

We can gain wisdom from reading God’s Word!
