From Bondage to Victory: A Journey Through Romans 8

Bible Passage: Romans 8

Summary: Romans 8 eloquently speaks to the believer's transition from bondage to liberation through the Holy Spirit, emphasizing that there is no condemnation for those in Christ and that our sufferings lead to future glory.

1. Condemnation Cancelled in Christ

Romans 8:1–4 1. “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4. so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

Therefore - the result of what was just said. Covers Romans 1-7.

Condemnation - set as the opposite of justification. Meaning there is no longer a penalty warranted.

The blood of Christ Jesus has covered all sins, because He paid our penalty on the cross for past, present, future sins.

Acts 13:39 “and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.”

2. Spirit Sustains True Life

Romans 8:5 5. “For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.”

For - this word introduces the reason there is no condemnation.

The rest is self explanatory.

Galatians 5:19–21 “Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Romans 8:9–11 9. “However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10. If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”

As a believer we are of the spirit, IF, we place our faith in Jesus Christ.

John 14:23 “Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.”

It will be evident in your day to day, i.e. mannerisms, speech, actions, etc.… Remind of Gal 5:19-21

If Christ is in us, our body is still dead, because only our spirit was redeemed and made new.

Colossians 3:5 “Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.”

3. Adoption Awakens Assurance

Romans 8:16–17 16. “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17. and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.”

To say the “spirit testifies with our spirit” is to say that the Holy Spirit gives validity of our adoption through our fruits.

5. Purposeful Prayer and Plan

Romans 8:26–30 26. “In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27. and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28. And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30. and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.”

The Holy Spirit that dwells in us carries things to the Father that we don’t even realize nor could we even articulate.

God and the Holy Spirit are one, so it stands to reason that He would know the mind of the Spirit.

God’s will is going to be done. We might step in it, but God can still use us to accomplish His will.

Conformed to the image of Christ is to act like Christ. Love all unconditionally. First born received preferential treatment in the family inheritance and physically. Also, the first born or first fruits belong to God.

6. Love Leads to Victory

Romans 8:31 “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?”

Romans 8:35 “Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?”

Romans 8:37–39 “But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Based on this scripture I very much believe that once your are saved, then you are always saved. That does not mean that you can get saved and then live like hell the rest of your life. If you are not displaying the fruits of the Spirit then can you really say that you are saved? To claim Jesus as Savior is to completely desire the Will of the Father to be done and we as believers would be studying God’s word and constantly praying to try and determine His will. Continuously working on our sanctification.

Big Idea: Believers in Christ are liberated from sin and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live victorious lives, showcasing the victory of Christ in their daily walk.
