THE FAITH OF A FATHER

Text: Hebrews 11:7

Good morning my friends, and welcome to His Vision Ministries. We are so glad that you have joined us this morning. I want to say first and foremost today, Happy Father’s Day to all of our dads out there. If you will be taking your copy of God’s Word this morning and turning over to Hebrews chapter eleven. Hebrews chapter eleven and I will read one verse in just a moment. Verse number seven.

I want to speak to you this morning on “The Faith of a Father.”

Father's Day is a wonderful opportunity to honor the men who have invested their lives in their families. Some fathers are remembered for their strength. Others are remembered for their wisdom, their work ethic, or their generosity. Yet the greatest thing that can be said about a father is not that he was successful, wealthy, talented, or admired. The greatest thing that can be said about a father is that he was a man of faith.

The world measures fathers by many standards. It applauds achievement, influence, and success. God measures fathers differently. God looks at the heart. God looks at whether a man trusts Him, follows Him, and leads his family toward Him.

When we think about fathers in Scripture, Noah stands as one of the greatest examples of faith-filled fatherhood. Hebrews 11, often called the Hall of Faith, records only one verse about Noah, but what a powerful verse it is. In that single verse, we discover how the faith of one man impacted an entire family and changed human history.

The world in Noah's day was corrupt beyond imagination. Violence filled the earth. Wickedness was rampant. Yet Noah stood out as a man who believed God when no one else did.

The faith of Noah teaches us that a father's faith can become a shelter for his family during life's storms.

Here is what I would like for you to take out the door this morning in the way of Life Application: The greatest gift a father can give his family is a faith that trusts God, obeys His Word, and points the next generation to Christ.

"By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith." — Hebrews 11:7 [THIS IS THE WORD OF THE LORD, PRAISE BE TO GOD!]

Joke: Someone once asked a father, 'What's the secret to raising children?' He said, 'I don't know. Every time I figure one stage out, they move to the next one! That's why fathers need faith—because the instruction manual keeps changing, but God never does.

Let us examine three powerful truths about the faith of a father.

I. A Father's Faith Believes God

"By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet..."

Noah's faith began with believing what God said.

God warned Noah about a coming flood. The remarkable thing is that Noah had never seen a flood before. Rain itself may have been unknown in the way we experience it today. God was speaking about events that had never occurred.

Noah had a choice.

He could believe God or ignore Him.

He could trust God's Word or trust public opinion.

He could walk by faith or walk by sight.

The same choice faces fathers today.

A father's faith begins when he takes God at His Word.

Faith is not believing because circumstances make sense. Faith is believing because God has spoken.

Joke: Noah spent over a hundred years building the ark. Fathers today can relate. We spend years building a life, building a family, building character in our children—and just like Noah, sometimes we're doing it while everybody around us thinks we're a little crazy! But Noah's faithfulness reminds us that a father's job isn't to follow the crowd; it's to follow God and lead his family safely through the storm.

Many fathers are waiting until everything makes sense before they obey God. But faith often requires us to move before we understand everything. Think about this...

Abraham left his homeland without knowing where he was going.

Moses confronted Pharaoh despite overwhelming odds.

Joshua marched around Jericho when military strategy suggested otherwise.

Noah built an ark when there was no evidence of a flood.

Faith trusts God even when circumstances do not.

A. Fathers Must Believe God's Promises

Our families desperately need fathers who believe God's promises.

Believe God's promise of salvation.

Believe God's promise of forgiveness.

Believe God's promise of guidance.

Believe God's promise of provision.

Believe God's promise that His Word never fails.

Children learn what is important by watching what their fathers trust.

If a father trusts money more than God, his children notice.

If a father trusts culture more than Scripture, his children notice.

If a father trusts politics more than prayer, his children notice.

But when a father genuinely trusts God, his children notice that too.

One of the greatest gifts a father can give his family is a visible faith that demonstrates confidence in God's Word.

The faith of a father begins by believing God.

II. A Father's Faith Obeys God

"Moved with fear, prepared an ark..."

Noah's faith was more than intellectual agreement. His faith produced action.

Faith that never changes behavior is not biblical faith.

When Noah heard God's warning, he did not simply nod in agreement. He picked up a hammer and started building.

Imagine the ridicule he endured.

For years he worked on the ark.

People laughed.

People mocked.

People criticized.

People questioned his sanity.

Yet Noah continued building.

Why?

Because faith obeys.

The ark was evidence that Noah believed what God said.

A. Obedience Is the Proof of Faith

Many people claim to believe God, but genuine faith always produces obedience.

Jesus said in John 14:15,

"If ye love me, keep my commandments."

A father's faith is demonstrated not merely by what he says but by how he lives.

Children are experts at detecting hypocrisy.

They know whether faith is real or merely a Sunday activity.

They know whether prayer is genuine or routine.

They know whether Scripture is valued or ignored.

A father's faith becomes powerful when it is consistently lived out.

B. Fathers Must Build Spiritual Arks

Noah built a physical ark.

Today's fathers must build spiritual arks.

We build spiritual arks when we pray for our families.

We build spiritual arks when we teach God's Word.

We build spiritual arks when we prioritize church.

We build spiritual arks when we model repentance and humility.

We build spiritual arks when we protect our homes from harmful influences.

Every prayer is another board on the ark.

Every act of obedience is another nail.

Every biblical conversation is another step toward safety.

Many fathers are concerned about the culture surrounding their children.

And rightly so.

We live in confusing times.

Truth is under attack.

Biblical values are mocked.

Temptations abound.

The answer is not panic.

The answer is faith-filled obedience.

Like Noah, fathers must continue building according to God's instructions regardless of cultural opposition.

C. Obedience Influences Others

Noah's obedience influenced his family.

His wife entered the ark.

His sons entered the ark.

His daughters-in-law entered the ark.

Noah's faith created an environment where his family could be saved.

A father cannot personally save his children. Salvation belongs to God alone.

However, a father can create a home where faith is nurtured, encouraged, and demonstrated.

Never underestimate the influence of a godly father.

Your prayers matter.

Your example matters.

Your integrity matters.

Your consistency matters.

The faith of a father obeys God.

III. A Father's Faith Protects His Family

"Prepared an ark to the saving of his house..."

One of the most beautiful statements in Hebrews 11:7 is that Noah prepared an ark for the saving of his house.

Noah's faith did not stop with himself.

His concern extended to his family.

A godly father understands that he has been entrusted with a sacred responsibility.

God has given him influence.

God has given him opportunities.

God has given him stewardship over those within his home.

Noah could not control every choice his family would make, but he could provide leadership.

A. Fathers Are Spiritual Watchmen

Throughout Scripture, God calls leaders to be watchmen.

Watchmen stay alert.

Watchmen recognize danger.

Watchmen sound warnings.

Watchmen protect those under their care.

Fathers are called to be spiritual watchmen.

A father watches over the influences entering his home.

A father guards against spiritual compromise.

A father points his family toward Christ.

A father recognizes that the greatest dangers are often spiritual rather than physical.

Many fathers work tirelessly to provide financial security.

That is commendable.

But spiritual security is even more important.

A well-funded home without God is still vulnerable.

A luxurious house without faith remains exposed.

The greatest protection a father can provide is spiritual leadership.

B. The World's Storm Is Coming

Just as judgment came in Noah's day, Scripture teaches that a future judgment is coming.

Jesus compared the days before His return to the days of Noah.

People were eating, drinking, marrying, and conducting business as usual.

Life seemed normal.

Then judgment arrived.

Many today are living without regard for eternity.

They ignore God's warnings.

They dismiss God's Word.

They mock biblical truth.

But fathers must lead their families with eternity in view.

The greatest question is not whether our children become successful.

The greatest question is whether they know Christ.

The greatest question is not whether they achieve worldly recognition.

The greatest question is whether they are prepared for eternity.

Noah understood this.

His faith moved him to action because he believed God's warning.

C. Faith Creates a Legacy

Noah's faith did not end with him.

Its impact continued for generations.

His sons carried forward the human race.

History was shaped because one man believed God.

Every father is building a legacy.

Some legacies are built through possessions.

Others through accomplishments.

Others through reputation.

But the greatest legacy is faith.

Money eventually disappears.

Possessions deteriorate.

Achievements fade.

Faith leaves an eternal impact.

Long after fathers are gone, their faith can continue influencing future generations.

Many believers today trace their spiritual heritage to a praying father or grandfather.

The seeds planted by a faithful father often bear fruit long after he has entered heaven.

The faith of a father protects his family and leaves a lasting legacy.

IV. The Ultimate Example of the Heavenly Father

While Noah provides a wonderful example, every earthly father falls short.

Noah himself was imperfect.

Like all men, he had weaknesses and failures.

The good news is that our hope is not ultimately in earthly fathers.

Our hope is in our Heavenly Father.

God is the perfect Father.

He loves unconditionally.

He provides faithfully.

He disciplines lovingly.

He guides wisely.

He protects completely.

The greatest expression of the Father's love was sending His Son, Jesus Christ.

John 3:16 declares:

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son..."

The cross demonstrates the heart of the Father.

God saw humanity trapped in sin.

God saw judgment approaching.

God provided a way of salvation.

In many ways, Noah's ark points us to Jesus Christ.

The ark was God's provision from judgment.

Jesus is God's provision from judgment.

The ark had one door.

Jesus declared Himself to be the door.

The ark carried people safely through the storm.

Christ carries believers safely through God's judgment.

Those inside the ark were secure.

Those in Christ are eternally secure.

Today, fathers need more than good intentions.

They need Christ.

Families need more than traditions.

They need Christ.

Homes need more than stability.

They need Christ.

The greatest thing a father can do is lead his family to Jesus.

Conclusion

The faith of a father is one of the most powerful influences in the world.

Noah's story reminds us that a father's faith:

Believes God.

Obeys God.

Protects his family.

Leaves a lasting legacy.

Perhaps you are a father today and feel inadequate.

You know your failures.

You know your shortcomings.

You know the times you have fallen short.

Take heart.

God has never used perfect fathers.

He uses surrendered fathers.

He uses fathers who trust Him.

He uses fathers who keep walking by faith.

Your family does not need a flawless man.

They need a faithful man.

They need a father who believes God when the world doubts.

They need a father who obeys God when the culture rebels.

They need a father who points them to Christ.

One man's faith built an ark.

One man's faith saved his household.

One man's faith changed history.

May God raise up fathers today whose faith is so genuine, so steadfast, and so courageous that generations to come will be blessed because they chose to trust God.

And may every father be able to say with Joshua:

"As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." (Joshua 24:15) Amen.
