Gathered in Grace
Family, friends, and loved ones, we are gathered here today in the presence of God to remember, to honor, and to say our earthly goodbyes to Jackie McElyea. In moments like this, words can feel small, and the weight in this room can feel incredibly heavy. Death is a stark reminder of the brokenness of our world, but as Christians, we do not gather today as those who have no hope.
We are here to walk through this valley together. As we look at the life Jackie lived and the void she leaves behind, I want us to focus on three specific movements of the heart today: Celebrating the Love, Celebrating the Loss, and Celebrating our Lord.
1. Celebrating the Love
First, we are here to Celebrate the Love.
The reason our hearts are heavy today is because Jackie loved deeply, and she was deeply loved in return. Love is a beautiful, eternal thing because it originates from God Himself. Scripture tells us in 1 Corinthians 13:13
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
When we look back on Jackie’s life, we see the echoes of that enduring love.
*Personal Reflection*
I was welcomed as one of her own.
I personally watched her open her heart and home to others.
I have know James and Jackie longer that I have known my wife of 39 years. I could go on and on with ways this family has touched my life, but everyone in this room could also.
We see it in the memories she left behind—the laughter shared, the quiet moments of guidance, and the sacrifices she made for the people in this room.
We see it in the legacy of her relationships with family, neighbors, and friends.
Every act of kindness, every shared smile, and every moment of joy we experienced with Jackie was a gift from above. Today, we refuse to let death steal those memories. We celebrate the love that Jackie poured into our lives, knowing that true love never fades.
2. Celebrating the Loss
Secondly, we are here to Celebrate the Loss.
When we say "celebrate the loss," we do not mean we are happy about death. The Bible tells us that death is an enemy. But celebrating the loss means we openly validate, honor, and acknowledge the immense pain we feel right now. It means recognizing that our grief is a profound testament to the high value of Jackie’s life. If she had not mattered so much to us, this room would not be filled with tears.
There is a beautiful, comforting moment in the Gospel of John 11:35. Jesus is standing outside the tomb of His dear friend Lazarus, surrounded by weeping family members. And the Bible simply says: "Jesus wept."
Jesus knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead.
He knew eternity was perfectly secure.
Yet, in that earthly moment, He still wept because He saw the pain of those He loved.
Grief is not a sign of weak faith; it is the price we pay for great love. To celebrate the loss means we don't hide our tears or pretend we are okay. We honor Jackie by admitting that our lives will look vastly different without her. We acknowledge the empty space she leaves behind, and we take comfort in knowing that God is "close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" Psalm 34:18
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
3. Celebrating our Lord
Finally, and most importantly, we pivot our eyes upward to Celebrate our Lord.
While the love gives us beautiful memories, and the loss brings us temporary tears, our Lord is the one who gives us eternal hope. We do not end this service in despair, because death does not have the final say. Jesus Christ conquered the grave so that death would be a doorway to eternal life, not a final destination.
Jesus promised us in John 14:1-3
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
Today, we praise and celebrate a Savior who:
-Comforts us in our deepest earthly sorrows.
-Promises a resurrection and a future where there will be no more pain, no more crying, and no more death (Revelation 21:4).
-Offers eternal life freely to all who place their trust and faith in Him.
For Jackie, her earthly battle is over, and she is resting in the glorious presence of the Almighty. And for us who remain, our Lord stands ready to be our rock, our fortress, and our comforter through the dark days ahead.
The Invitation: Responding to the Gospel
*Pianist plays “He Touched Me” during invitation*
As we look at the reality of Jackie's passing, we are faced with the reality of our own lives. A funeral is a reminder that our time on this earth is temporary. But the message of Jesus Christ is that eternity is secure for those who belong to Him.The Bible tells us that we have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory, but God loved us so much that He sent Jesus to pay the penalty for our sins on the cross. He died, He was buried, and He rose again on the third day to conquer sin and death forever.
Right now, Jesus is extending an invitation to you. He says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). If you do not have the assurance today that you would join Jackie in eternity, you can receive that gift right now. The Gospel requires a response. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9). You can leave this room today not only comforted in your grief, but entirely transformed by His grace.

Conclusion & Prayer
As we prepare to leave this place, let us carry with us the love Jackie gave us, let us be gentle with one another in our loss, and let us anchor our souls firmly in our Lord.
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the life of Jackie McElyea. We thank You for the love we shared and the beautiful impact she left on our hearts and lives. Lord, You see the deep loss we feel today. We ask that Your Holy Spirit wraps around this family and every friend gathered here, bringing a peace that surpasses all human understanding. Lord, I pray for anyone here who does not yet know You. Open their hearts right now to receive Your love, Your forgiveness, and Your gift of eternal life. We place our hope, our grief, and our futures into Your hands, celebrating that You are a good, loving, and victorious Lord. In Jesus' name, Amen.
